Screening of Different Organic Materials Against Root-knot Nematode of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the organic materials for management of root knot nematode of tomato. Root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) infested soils were treated with Furadan 5G, saw dust, rice husk, poultry bedding and tea waste. All treatment gave satisfactory reduction of gall development on roots and increased plant growth as well as yield of tomato. Among the treatments, poultry bedding appeared to be the best amendments for root knot nematode reduction and improvement of plant growth as well as increased yield of tomato.

Objectives:

To screen available and low cost organic materials to manage root-knot nematodes and to increase yield of tomato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Rabi 2010-11, in the field of Plant Pathology Division BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur with 7 treatments namely i) Control, ii) Furadan (F) 5G @ 40 kg/ha, iii) Fresh saw dust @ 10 g/plant, iv) Dry saw dust @ 10 g/plant, v) Rice husk @ 10 g/plant, vi) Poultry bedding @ 10 g/plant and vii) Tea waste @ 10 g/plant. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The plants were inoculated with one gram of severely infected galled chopped roots of tomato. The unit plot size 3m x 2.5m keeping 1m distance from plot to plot. Plant to plant distance 50 cm and line to line distance 60 cm was maintained. All the organic materials and Furadan 5G were added at the time of seedling transplanting. Thirty days old tomato seedlings var. Ratan, grown on sterilized soils was transplanted. Ten additional seedlings were transplanted in between two lines. Fertilizers were added during final land preparation, weeding and irrigation were done as and when necessary. After 60 days of seedling transplanting, the additional seedlings were uprooted for data collection. Data collection: The following data were measured and recorded. Plant height (cm), Plant weight (gm), root length (cm), root weight (gm), gall index (0-10 scale) (Zeck, 1971) was recorded at 60 days after transplanting and at final harvesting , number of fruits/5 plants, fruits yield/ 5 plant and total fruit yield /plot (kg).

Achievement/Findings:

The highest plant growth in terms of shoot and root length and fresh shoot weights were resulted from the treatments where poultry bedding was applied and the lowest plant growth was resulted from control treatment. Regarding nematode disease incidence, all the treatments significantly reduced the root knot disease incidence. The highest gall index was (5.16 at 60 days after transplanting and 9.06 at final harvesting stage) recorded from the control and lowest in poultry bedding (1.83 at 60 days after transplanting and 4.83 at final harvesting stage) treatment. But there was no significant difference among the treatment in reducing root-knot disease incidence of tomato. The highest numbers of fruits per plant (29.11) were obtained from the treatment received poultry bedding. All other treatments showed similar results compared to control. Regarding the yield of tomato, all the treatments gave significantly higher yield in comparison to control. Poultry bedding gave the highest yield (58.22 t/ha) and the lowest yield (44.82 t/ha) was recorded from control treatment where no organic matter or nematicide was used. Yield increased 29.90% due to application of poultry bedding compared to control where as it is 16.47% in the chemical Furadan 5G treatment. Furadan 5G alone performed better in increasing growth of tomato plant, reducing disease incidence and increasing yield than the control. However, when poultry bedding was supplemented with Furadan 5G, the plant growth and yield of tomato increased and disease incidence were reduced which was better than chemical nematicide alone. Therefore, the present study indicated that soil amendment with poultry bedding is the best treatment for reducing root-knot nematode disease and increasing plant growth as well as yield of tomato.
