Effect of Healthy and Nematode Infested Seedlings, Sawdust Burning and Furadan 5g on the Control of Root Knot Nematode of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

significant increased of tomato yield and control of root-knot nematode was achieved with the treatment of the soil with sawdust burning and nematicide. The yield was further increased when nematode free healthy seedlings were used. The highest tomato yield 45.96 ton/ha was obtained from the treatment sawdust burning along with nematicide and healthy seedlings. The highest yield increased over control 89.4% was obtained from this treatment. It was followed by 74.2% given by sawdust burning and healthy seedlings without nematicide.

Objectives:

To study the effect of healthy and nematode infested seedlings, sawdust burning and Furadan 5G on the control of root knot nematode of tomato

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Plant Pathology Division of BARI, during 2002-03 seasons. The experimental design was simple RCBD with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 2 x 2 m. The tomato seedlings cv. Ratan was raised in two separate seed beds. Root-knot nematode infected seedlings were raised in nematode sick plot. Healthy seedlings were raised in seed bed where soil was previously treated with formaldehyde. The plots received saw dust burning was covered with 4 cm thick saw dust uniformly and was burnt at the noon. The seedlings were planted after 14 days following proper culture and fertilization. Furadan 5G was added twice, 1st at @ 45 kg/ha at the time of transplanting and second @ 25 kg/ha 35 days after transplanting. The seedlings were planted keeping 60 x 40 cm plant to plant and line to line distance, respectively. Seventy five days after transplantation, five plants from each plot was uprooted randomly and washed carefully. The roots were indexed for root galls following 0-10 scale (Zech, 1971), where 0 represented roots free of galls and 10 maximum galled roots. Data on fresh shoot wt, shoot ht, root wt., were also recorded. At the time of fruit setting, total no. and wt. of fruit/plant were recorded from randomly selected five plants. The yields were converted to yield (kg)/plot and ton/ha.
