Integrated Management of Root-knot Nematode of Okra with Chemicals and Organic Soil Amendments

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out to test the efficacy of nematicide and some organic amendments to control root knot nematode of okra. Root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp) infested soils were treated with poultry refuse, mustard oil cake, Furadan 5G and their combination like poultry refuse+ Furadan 5G and mustard oil cake+ Furadan 5G. All the treatments gave satisfactory reduction of gall development on roots and increased plant growth of okra. Among the treatments, poultry refuse alone and its combination with nematicide appeared to be the best amendments for root knot nematode reduction and improvement of plant growth of okra.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of single and integrated approaches of organic soil amendments and nematicide to combat the root-knot nematode of lady’s finger.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Plant Pathology Division BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur with 8 treatments namely i) Control, ii) Furadan 5G @ 40 kg/ha iii) Poultry refuse (PR) @ 5 t/ha iv) Poultry refuse @ 3 t/ha v) Poultry refuse @ 3 t/ha+ Furadan 5G @ 20 kg/ha vi) Mustard oil cake (MOC) @ 600 kg/ha vii) Mustard oil cake @ 300 kg/ha and viii) Mustard oil cake @ 300 kg/ha+ Furadan 5G @ 20 kg/ha. Poultry refuse and mustard oil cake were applied three weeks before seed sowing while Furadan 5G was applied at the time of seed sowing. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The plants were inoculated with one gram of severely infected galled chopped roots of tomato at the time of treatment application. The unit plots size was 3m x 2m and spacing was 50cm X 60 cm. Ten additional seeds were sowing in between two line. The nematicide Furadan 5G was applied at the time of seed sowing. After 60 days of seedling emergence, the additional ten seedlings were uprooted for data collection. Data collection: The following data were recorded by standard procedures. i) Length of shoot (cm/plant) ii) Fresh weight of shoot (gm/plant) iii) Length of root (cm/plant) iv) Fresh wt of root (gm/plant) v) yield/plot vi) Gall index (0-10 scale) at 60 days of seedling transplanting and at time of final harvesting according to the method described by Zeck (1971).

Achievement/Findings:

Organic soil amendments alone or integration with nematicide caused significant (p=0.05) effect on the growth of okra plant and also severity of root knot nematode disease. Higher shoot length (50.60-64.47 cm) were obtained due to the application of organic soil amendments or in combination of organic soil amendments with Furadan 5G. Poultry refuse alone (@ 5 t/ha) gave maximum plant height followed by PR + Furadan, MOC (@ 600 kg/ha). Poultry refuse alone (@ 5 t/ha) and in combination with Furadan 5G gave the maximum shoot weight of okra followed by MOC alone or in combination with Furadan 5G. Significantly better root lengths were recorded from all the treatments. Control treatment gave the minimum shoot and root length and shoots weight. Besides, gall index was maximum (5.07 at 60 days transplanting and 7.14 at harvesting satge) in control treatment and minimum when poultry refuse alone (5t/ha) or in combination of poultry refuse (3t/ha) with Furadan 5G (20 kg/ha) were used. Poultry refuse alone (3t/ha), mustard oil cake alone or in combination with Furadan 5G and Furadan 5G alone also sharply reduced the gall index of okra (Table 143). Application of poultry refuse alone (5 t/ha) or integration of poultry refuse (3 t/ha) with Furadan 5G (20 kg/ha) gave maximum fruits yield of lady’s finger followed by Mustard oil cake (300 kg/ha) with Furadan 5G (20 kg/ha) and Mustard oil cake (600 kg/ha) and minimum yield of lady’s finger was recorded from control treatment where either organic soil amendment or Furadan was not used. Poultry refuse alone (5 t/ha) or integration of poultry refuse (3 t/ha) with Furadan 5G (20 kg/ha) increased more than 20% yield of lady’s finger compared to control.
