Characterization of Wild Jute(corchorus Aestuans) Germplasm.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at JAES, Manikganj in 2010 to characterize of forty three Corchorus aestuans germplasm collected from different sources were sown on 15 March ,2010 along with the check varieties CVL-1 and O-9897. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Corchorus descriptor list. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight accession no. 3965, 3963, 3307, 4171, 4216 and 4175 showed better performance than other accessions.

Objectives:

To characterize some of wild jute (Corchorus aestuans L.) germplasm as per Corchorus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. The accessions were sown in 15 March, 2010 with check variety CVL-1 and O-9897. Other standard cultural and intercultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. Forty three accession viz. 1469, 1470, 1471, 1472, 1537, 3307, 3943, 3944, 3946, 3948, 3949, 3950, 3951, 3956, 3960, 3962, 3963, 3965, 3966, 3967, 3969, 3974, 3994, 4076, 4077, 4078, 4165, 4166, 4169, 4171, 4175, 4216, 4217, 4236, 4684, 4741, 4766, 4821, 4854, 4864, 4865, 4893 and 5104 were characterized.
