Hybridization Among the Genotypes of Kenaf

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twelve accessions (Accs. 1565, 1568, 1571, 1585, 1629, 1657, 1986, 3745, 4394, 4626, 1641 and 3688), Three advanced lines (1641/B, 1641/C and SAMU’93), two varieties (BJRI Kenaf-3 and HS-24) and two species (Hibiscus acetosella L. and Hibiscus radiatus L.) were grown in the green house premises of BJRI on August-September 2012. Two times sowing were done after 15 days interval to ensure synchronization of flowering. At the time of flowering a total of 87 crosses were made among the parental lines in 33 cross combinations. Among 87 crosses, seeds obtained from 48 pods. The pods were maintained and seeds were collected separately.

Objectives:

Development of breeding materials for high yielding, early maturing, smooth, waterlogging and salinity tolerant.

Methodology:

Twelve accessions (Accs. 1565, 1568, 1571, 1585, 1629, 1657, 1986, 3745, 4394, 4626, 1641 and 3688), Three advanced lines (1641/B, 1641/C and SAMU’93), two varieties (BJRI Kenaf-3 and HS-24) and two species (Hibiscus acetosella L. and Hibiscus radiatus L.) were grown in the green house premises of BJRI on August-September 2012. Two times sowing were done after 15 days interval to ensure synchronization of flowering.Recommended intercultural and agronomic practices were done for raising the parental materials.At afternoon, the un-opend but probably mature flowers were emasculated and bagged separately. Next morning,the emasculated flowers were pollinated by desired parent and tagging then bagging.The developed hybrids pods were maintained as F1 and next year conformation test.
