Characterization of Selected Deshi Jute (c. Capsularis L.) Germplasm Collected from Rajshahi, Khulna, Chittagong and Dhaka Divisions for Yield Contributing Characters

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Central Station, Dhaka to characterize of selected twenty five accessions of deshi jute collected from different sources were sown on 1 April, 1994 along with the check varieties CVL-1 and CC-45. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Corchorus descriptor. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight accessions 447, 2210, 2214, 2415, 3259, 3266, 3047, 3490, 3492, 3350, 3553, 3232, 3337, 3449 and 3260 performed better than the check varieties.

Objectives:

To characterize some of selected deshi jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) germplasm as per Corchorus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Central Station, Dhaka in 1994. Twenty five accessions of selected tossa jute germplasm collected from different sources along with check varieties CVL-1 and CC-45 were sown on 1 April, 1994. The materials under study were 447, 850, 852, 2134, 2147, 2171, 2172, 2207, 2210, 2214, 2218, 2233, 2252, 2292, 2294, 2296, 2386, 2415, 2430, 2545, 2578, 2680, 2693, 2762 and 2820. The unit plot size for each accession was 5 rows of 3 m length, spacing 30 cm between rows and 5-7 cm between plants and 1 m between plots. Standard cultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data on stem colour, leaf colour, vain colour, petiole colour, stipule colour, bud colour, and fruit colour were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data on plant height, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight were collected. The data were analyzed following standard statistical procedure.
