Characterization of Selected Deshi Jute (c. Capsularis L.) Germplasm Collected from Different Sources.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty three selected deshi jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) germplasm were characterized at JAES, Manikganj in 2010. The accessions were sown on 5 April, 2010 along with the check varieties CVL-1 and BJC-7370. The accessions were characterized for their morpho-agronomic twenty attributes as per Corchorus descriptor. Considerable ranges of variability were observed in stem colour, leaf colour, vain colour, petiole colour, stipule colour, bud colour, fruit colour, technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight, dry stick weight and green weight with leaves. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. Based on the major yield contributing characters accessions 3266, 3490, 3450, 3492, 3553, 3232, 3259 and 3350 performed better than the check varieties.

Objectives:

To characterize some of selected deshi jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) germplasm as per Corchorus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj in 2010. Twent three accessions of selected deshi jute germplasm collected from different sources along with check variety CVL-1 and BJC-7370 were sown on 5 April, 2010. The materials under study were 3020, 3047, 3097, 3140, 3151, 3232, 3259, 3260, 3266, 3269, 3309, 3326, 3335, 3337, 3350, 3407, 3440, 3449, 3478, 3485, 3490, 3492 and 3553. The unit plot size for each accession was 5 rows of 3 m length, spacing 30 cm between rows and 5-7 cm between plants and 1 m between plots. Standard cultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data on stem colour, leaf colour, vain colour, petiole colour, stipule colour, bud colour, and fruit colour were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data on plant height, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight were collected. The data were analyzed following standard statistical procedure.
