Characterization of Mesta (hibiscus Sabdariffa L.) Germplasm Collected from Rajshahi, Khulna, Chittagong and Dhaka Division for Yield Contributing Characters 1994

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Central Station, Dhaka to characterize of twenty selected mesta germplasm collected from different divisions of Bangladesh were sown on 9 April, 1994 along with the check variety HS-24. The seeds were sown in 4.6 m long single row for each accession with three replications in Randomized Complete Block Design. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Hibiscus descriptor. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight accessions 1702, 2937, 3113, 3054, 3367 and 3403 performed better than the check variety.

Objectives:

To characterize some of mesta (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) germplasm as per Hibiscus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Central Station, Dhaka in 1994. Twenty accessions of mesta germplasm collected from different sources along with check variety HS-24 were sown on 09 April, 1994. The materials under study were accession 1702, 2484, 2508, 2554, 2626, 2801, 2901, 2937, 3059, 3367, 3378, 3383, 3403, 3575, 3931, 3932, 3045, 3110, 3113 and 3115. The unit plot size for each accession was 5 rows of 3 m length, spacing 30 cm between rows and 5-7 cm between plants and 1 m between plots. Standard cultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data on stem colour, leaf colour, vain colour, petiole colour, stipule colour, bud colour, and fruit colour were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data on plant height, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight were collected. The data were analyzed following standard statistical procedure.
