Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five GLH species were recorded from rice field and light trap. Among them two species were tentatively identified as new record. The abundance of the five species were in the order of N. virescens, N. nigropictus, N. malayanus, N. cincticeps and N. parvus. The dominant species was N. virescens which occurred in all the seasons. Female biased sex ration was observed in all the habitats.

Objectives:

To know the incidence pattern and sex composition of different species of GLH

Methodology:

The presence of different species of green leafhopper, their abundance and incidence pattern and also the sex composition were studied in seedbed, rice field and light trap at BRRI farm, Gazipur during Boro 2004. Weekly sampling (100 complete sweeps) was done from seedbed and rice field. The light trap catches of GLH were also collected once in a week. The collected GLH specimens were counted and identified upto species level.

Achievement/Findings:

Five species of GLH i.e., Nephotettix virescens, N. nigropictus, N. malayanus, N. cincticeps, and N. parvus were recorded. The first 3 species are already recorded in Bangladesh. The rest of two species were tentatively identified and was compared with authentic specimen later on. The abundance of GLH species were in the order of N. virescens> N. nigropictus> N. malayanus > N. cincticeps> N. parvus. In most of the cases female GLH dominated over male. In seedbed the most abundant species was N. virescens. The species occurred in higher number in December and February. The sex ratio (female: male) varied from 1:0.8-1:1.2. Like seedbed N. virescens was also dominant species in rice field followed by N. nigropictus. The population of N. virescens peaked in December, January, April and May. The highest sex ratio was 1:2 in December. Light trap catches showed both N. virescens and N. nigropictus dominated during December. The population of N. virescens again peaked in May. The sex ratio also increased to 1:3 during December.
