Two species of weed, Echinochloa crusgalli and E. colona can serve as alternate host of rice bug. Among the two weeds, development duration was shorter on E. crusgalli. Rice bug laid more eggs on rice than the other two weeds. The preoviposition period was significantly lower on rice compared to E. crus-galli and E. colona but oviposition period were significantly longer in rice. The total number eggs laid on on E. crus-galli and E. colona were statistically similar but significantly higher in rice. The longevity of female RB was statistically similar on rice and E. crus-galli but significantly shorter when reared on E. colona. Male survival was significantly longer on rice and no significant difference was observed when compared with E. crus-galli and E. colona.

To study the incidence pattern in different rice seasons and also off rice season activity of the pest

An experiment was conducted in the greenhouse from September to November 2003 to evaluate the survival mechanism of rice bug during off-rice period. Three graminaceous weeds, Echinochloa crus-galli, E. colona and Leptochloa chinensis were used for rearing of rice bug. Rice (BR3) was used as control. There were 10 replications in each treatment from nymph to adult stage and 5 replications from adult to its end of life. Development duration of different nymphal instars, body weight and length, fecundity and longevity were studied from the experiment.

No significant difference were observed in nymphal duration in case of 1st and 2nd instar, but in case of 3rd instar nymph the duration was significantly higher on E. colona and L. chinensis compared to E. crus-galli and rice. Fourth instar nymphs last long on E. colona. The duration of 5th instar nymph significantly higher on E colona compared to E. crus-galli, and rice. The total nymphal duration was significantly higher on E. colona and no statistical differences were observed when reared on rice and E. crus-galli. Rice bug attained upto 3rd instar and after that they did not moult when reared on L. chinensis. But they could alive without moulting on an average of 16 days. The body wt. of 2nd and 3rd instar nymphs were significantly higher on rice but lower on L. chinensis. Body wt. of 4th to 5th instar nymph and adult of RB was significantly higher on rice followed by E. crus-galli and E. colona. There was no significant difference in body length of different instars and adult when reared on Rice and E. crusgalli but significantly shorter on E. colona. The preoviposition period was significantly lower on rice compared to E. crus-galli and E. colona but oviposition period were significantly longer in rice. The number of batch of eggs were statistically similar in all three weeds. The total number eggs laid on on E. crus-galli and E. colona were statistically similar but significantly higher in rice. The longevity of female RB was statistically similar on rice and E. crus-galli but significantly shorter when reared on E. colona. Male survival was significantly longer on rice and no significant difference was observed when compared with E. crus-galli and E. colona.
