Larval-pupal Parasitoids of Rice Gall Midge and the Level of Parasitism

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two platygasterids, two pteromalids and one species of eupelmid parasitoids found to parasitized rice gall midge at Gazipur. Among them Platygaster oryzae Cameron (Platygasteridae), Neanastatus cinctiventris Girault (Eupelmidae), Propicroscystus mirificus (Girault) and Trichomalopsis apanteloctenae (Crawford) (Pteromalidae) were previously recorded in Bangladesh (Islam et al. 2003). While Platygaster foersteri (Gahan) (Platygasteridae) appeared to be a new record in the country.

Objectives:

To know the larval and pupal parasitoid and parasitism of rice gall midge

Methodology:

Observations on the larval-pupal parasitism of rice gall midge were made at BRRI farm, Gazipur during T. Aman 2003. Rice tillers with gall midge damage (onion shoot) were collected from the field weekly. The collected tillers were checked in the laboratory against light to locate the position of gall midge larva or pupa and cut to fit into a 19.75 cm long test tube with some water at the bottom. Tube was closed tightly by cotton and checked everyday to record the emergence of parasitoids or adult gall midge. The emerged parasitoids preserved in 70% alcohol and later identified. In addition, all the onion-shoots were dissected to record dead adult parasitoid or gall midge, if any.

Achievement/Findings:

A total 756 onion shoots were collected from field and reared for the emergence of GM adult and parasitoids. Out of these, parasitoids emerged from 291 onion shoots. Two platygasterids, two pteromalids and one eupelmid parasitoid found to parasitize rice gall midge at Gazipur. Among them Platygaster oryzae Cameron (Platygasteridae), Neanastatus cinctiventris Girault (Eupelmidae), Propicroscystus mirificus (Girault) and Trichomalopsis apanteloctenae (Crawford) (Pteromalidae) were previously recorded in Bangladesh. While Platygaster foersteri (Gahan) (Platygasteridae) appeared to be a new record in the country. Gall midge larval and pupal parasitism was moderate during the early period of the T.Aman season, which increased over time and approached to 100% at the end of the season. Average larval/pupal parasitism rate was 62.6%. However, high rate of parasitism early in the season will be more effective in regulating gall midge populations then late in the season.
