A field experiment on fertilizer management of maize-sweet potato intercropping system was carried out at BARI farm, Gazipur during rabi season of 2005-2006 to determine economic fertilizer dose for hybrid maize-sweet potato intercropping system. Fertilizer dose of 70-26-84-10, 90-35-92-20, 110-44-100-30 and 130-53-108-40 kg/ha NPKS on sweet potato normal row + 1 row maize and that of 150-26-50-10, 200-35-66-20, 250-53-100-30 and 300-66-125-40 kg/ha NPKS on maize paired row + 2 rows sweet potato intercropping system were tested. Grain yield of maize in paired row maize + 2 rows sweet potato intercropping system varied significantly at different fertilizer levels but in sweet potato normal row + 1 row maize, grain yields were identical. Sweet potato yield in sweet potato normal row + 1 row maize combination increased significantly and in paired row maize + 2 rows sweet potato planting system, tuber yields were insignificant at different fertilizer levels. The highest equivalent yield of maize (12.68 t/ha) and sweet potato (25.35 t/ha), and the highest BCR (3.24) were recorded in paired row maize + 2 rows sweet potato with N250 P55 K100 S30 kg/ha but those in sweet potato normal row + 1 row maize with N130P53K108S40 kg/ha were recorded as 11.31 t/ha, 22.61 t/ha, 2.47, respectively. The results revealed that fertilizer dose of N130P53K108S40 kg/ha for sweet potato normal rows + 1 row maize; and N250P53K100S30 kg/ha for maize paired row + 2 rows sweet potato planting system is the most productive and economic. Moreover, maize paired row + 2 rows sweet potato with N250P53K100S30 kg/ha is more profitable than sweet potato normal rows + 1 row maize with N130P53K108S40 kg/ha

To determine the optimum and economic fertilizer dose for maize-sweet potato intercropping system in two different planting systems having minimum crop competition.

The experiment was conducted at BARI farm, Gazipur during rabi season of 2005-2006. The soil of the experimental field was silty clay loam in texture with pH 5.8 belonging to Chhiata series under AEZ-28. The soil was low in organic matter (1.2%) and deficient in total nitrogen (0.07%), available phosphorus (13 ppm), exchangeable potassium (0.15 meq 100-1 g soil) and available sulphur (12 ppm). Eight-treatment combinations evaluated were as follows: T1 = Sweet potato (SP) normal row (60 x 30 cm) +1 row maize (120 cm x 25 cm) after 2 rows sweet potato (100% SP : 50% M) + N70P26K84S10 kg/ha T2 = SP normal row + 1 row maize after 2 rows sweet potato + N90P35K92S20 kg/ha T3 = SP normal row +1 row maize after 2 rows sweet potato + N110P44K100S30 kg/ha T4 = SP normal row +1 row maize after 2 rows sweet potato + N130P53K108S40 kg/ha T5 = Paired rows maize (37.5/150/37.5 x 25 cm) + 2 rows SP (60 x 30 cm) (100%M : 50% SP)+ N150P26K50S10 kg/ha T6 = Paired row maize + 2 rows SP + N200P35K66S20 kg/ha T7 = Paired row maize + 2 rows SP + N250P53K100S30 kg/ha T8 = Paired row maize + 2 rows SP + N300P66K125S40 kg/ha The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4.5 m x 3.0 m. The hybrid maize (var. Pacific 988) and sweet potato (BARI SP 1) were used in this intercropping experiment. Seeds of maize and vines of sweet potato were sown/planted on November 30, 2005 according to treatments. In sweet potato normal rows + 1 rows maize planting system, 55,555 sweet potato vines and 26,666 maize plants/ha can be accommodated. Conversely, 53,333 maize plants and 27,777 sweet potato vines/ha were maintained in maize paired row + 2 rows sweet potato planting system. The full amount of P K S and 1/3 N were applied as basal in the form of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and urea, respectively. The remaining N was top dressed in two equal splits at 30 and 60 days after sowing (DAS) to maize rows. A light irrigation was given after sowing/planting for proper establishment of crops. Subsequently three irrigation  were applied at 30, 60 and 90 DAS. Two hand weeding were done at 20 and 40 DAS to keep the crops reasonably weed free. Yield components of maize and sweet potato were taken from randomly selected 10 plants from each plot. Maize was harvested at 145 DAS and sweet potato at 148 DAS. Yields of both the crops were taken from whole plot. Equivalent yields were computed using the formula of Bandyopadhaya (1984). Data on yield and yield components of both the crops were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged using LSD. Economic analysis was also done.

The results revealed that fertilizer dose of N130P53K108S40 kg/ha for sweet potato normal rows + 1 row maize; and N250P53K100S30 kg/ha for maize paired row + 2 rows sweet potato planting system is the most productive and economic. Moreover, maize paired row + 2 rows sweet potato with N250P53K100S30 kg/ha is more profitable than sweet potato normal rows + 1 row maize with N130P53K108S40 kg/ha.
