Characterization and Variability in Mustard and Rapeseed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Characterization and genetic variability in 146 accessions of mustard (Brassica campestris and Brassica juncea) and rapeseed (Brassica napus) were studied at PGRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2004-05. Variability was found in siliqua attitude, leaf blade shape in outline, leaf division (incision), flower colour and seed colour. The highest variation was observed in the character of leaf division (incision) such as entire, sinuate, lyrate and lacerate. Among the total accessions (146 acc.), 1.37% entire (2 acc.), 23.29% sinuate (34 acc.), 74.66% lyrate (109 acc.) and 0.68% lacerate (1 acc.) followed by leaf blade shape in outline such as spathulate, ovate and lanceolate. These were 76.71% spathulate (112 acc.), 15.07% ovate (22 acc.), and 8.22% lanceolate (12 acc.). Siliqua attitude viz. erect 99.32% in 145 acc. and pointing down 0.68% in 1 acc.; flower colour viz. white 3.42% in 5 acc. and yellow 96.58% in 141 acc. The accessions produced 59 to 1461 siliqua per plant.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2004-2005. One hundred forty six accessions of mustard and rape seed were used in this study. Of these, some accessions were indigenous and some were exotic. The date of sowing was on 31 October, 2004. Line to line distance was 40 cm, each bed was 4m width. The experiment was conducted in Alfa-lattice design with three replications. Manure and fertilizers were applied during final land preparation at the rate of urea- 300kg/ha, TSP-180kg/ha, MP-100kg/ha, Gypsum-180kg/ha and Zinc oxide- 0.5kg/ha. Melathion 57 EC (2 ml/l) was applied for controlling aphid. Normal cultivation techniques, intercultural operations and irrigations were applied to grow the crop. Observations were recorded on eight qualitative and sixteen quantitative traits as per IBPGR descriptor.

Achievement/Findings:

Eight qualitative characters were studied for 146 accessions. The maximum variation was observed in the character of leaf division (incision) such as entire, sinuate, lyrate and lacerate. Among the accessions (146 acc.), 1.37% entire (2 acc.), 23.29% sinuate (34 acc.), 74.66% lyrate (109 acc.) and 0.68% lacerate (1 acc.) followed by leaf blade shape in outline such as spathulate, ovate and lanceolate. These were 76.71% spathulate (112 acc.), 15.07% ovate (22 acc.), 8.22% lanceolate (12 acc.). siliqua attitude, flower colour and seed colour showed two types of variability among the accessions. In these characters, siliqua attitude viz. erect 99.32% in 145 acc. and pointing down 0.68% in 1 acc.; flower colour viz. white 3.42% in 5 acc. and yellow 96.58% in 141 acc.; seed colour viz. grayed orange group (164 C) 9.59% in 14 acc. and brown group (200 A) 90.41% in 132 acc. All accessions showed elongate branching stems terminating in enlarged floral or pre-floral apices growth habit, elongate branching stems terminating in flower buds or pre floral meristems axilliary stem and bud growth, terminal head with smaller heads on axillary shoots floral apex branching pattern. The straw weight of five plants (excluding root) was 534.40 g and its ranged from 100.00 - 3166.60 g. The mean number of siliqua per plant was 335.08 and its ranged was 59 to 1461. On average, plant height was 115.47 cm and range (51-209 cm). Finally, the seeds are preserved as active and base collections for future utilization. Six accessions were selected based on seed yield. The selected accessions were OD-45, AEMM-471, MHQ-212, MHQ-228, OT-90 and BD-7121.
