Study of Life Table Parameters of Rice Hispa

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Life tables of rice hispa were constructed in Boro 2003-04 at BRRI farm and farmers field in Habiganj to define the mortality of the pest in different life stages. One mating pair of hispa was confined by mylar cage on a rice plant in a large rice field (BRRI dhan28 at BRRI farm and BRRI dhan29 at farmers field of Habiganj) in mid tillering stage. The female was allowed to lay eggs for 3 nights and then placed on another hill. In this way 3 hills were used for egg laying by a female. Fifty such females were allowed to deposit eggs on 150 hills to make a cohort of eggs. The eggs were allowed to develop in to adult. Mortality at different stages were recorded. It was found that rice hispa showed 97.47 and 96.26% generation mortality at BRRI Gazipur and Habiganj, respectively. Mortality of egg, grub and pupae were 41.9-52.04%, 47.13-47.19% and 0.26-7.29%, respectively. Only 19% of the egg died of parasitism. The other mortality might be due to unfavourable climatic conditions.

Achievement/Findings:

A cohort of 392 and 401 eggs were reared at BRRI farm and farmers field of Habiganj respectively. Four adults of hispa emerged from these eggs at BRRI farms with a sex ratio of 1:1 (male:female). The generation mortality of 99.47%. The highest contribution in the generation mortality was due to the egg mortality (52.04%). Mortality in the larval and pupal stages contributed 47.19% and 0.26% respectively to the generation mortality. Only 19% of the eggs died of parasitism and reason for death of 81% eggs could not be explained. The larval and pupal mortality was also caused by unknown reasons. Most of the unexplained mortality was probably due to unfavourable climatic factors. Fifteen adults of hispa emerged from the eggs at farmers field of Habiganj with a sex ratio of 1:1.5 (male:female). The generation mortality was 96.26%. The highest generation mortality was due to the grub mortality (47.13%). Mortality in the egg and pupal stages contributed 41.9% and 7.29% respectively to the generation mortality.
