Characterization and Variability in Prosomillet

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Characterization and genetic variability for 22 characters in 168 accessions of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum) were studied at PGRC, BARI, Gazipur, during 2004-05. All the accessions showed variation in qualitative and quantitative descriptors. Good variations were observed among the quantitative traits. Variability was found in seed colour such as gray 4.17% in 7 acc., grayed-brown 60.12% in 101 acc. and grayed-orange 35.71% in 60 acc. All the accessions showed erect geniculate plant growth habit, green plant pigmentation, inflorescence with arched branches, race contractum inflorescence shape, Iiflorescence openrace miliaceum, compactness of Inflorescence. The maximum coefficient of variation was obtained from straw weight (41.32%) followed by seed yield (37.52%), number of nodes per primary axis of inflorescence (24.42%), percent of lodging at maturity (24.05%), days to green fruit harvest (13.49%) and the lowest in fruit (0.94%).

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Center, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2004-2005. One hundred sixty eight accessions of prosomillet collected from different districts were used in this study. The seeds were sown in the field on 21 November, 2004. Line to line distance was 40 cm and each bed was 4 m width. The experiment was conducted in Alfa-lattice design with three replications. When land was prepared the following fertilizers and manure were mixed in each pit, Urea- 300kg/ha, TSP-180kg/ha, MP-100kg/ha, Gypsum- 180kg/ha and Zinc oxide- 0.5kg/ha. 5kg Urea with water was sprayed per pit. Normal cultivation techniques, intercultural operations and irrigation were applied to grow the crop. Observations were recorded on five (5) qualitative and seventeen (17) quantitative traits as per IBPGR descriptor.

Achievement/Findings:

Five qualitative characters were studied for 168 accessions. The accessions showed variations under individual character. Variation was observed in seed colour such as gray (201 A) 4.17% in 7 acc., grayed-brown (199 C) 60.12% in101 acc. and gray-orange (165 D) 35.71% in 60 acc. among the accessions.. No variability was observed in four characters such as plant growth habit, plant pigmentation, inflorescence shape, compactness of Inflorescence i.e. all the accessions showed erect geniculate plant growth habit, green plant pigmentation, inflorescence with arched branches-race contractum inflorescence shape, inflorescence open-race miliaceum compactness of Inflorescence. All 168 accessions studied for seventeen important quantitative characters showed a wide range of variation. For these characters, range, mean, standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation indicated their comparative performances. Days to crop harvest was in 115.82 days and range was 115 to124 days. The straw weight of five plants was 65.10 g (excluding root) and ranging from 24 to188 g; on average plant height was 58.37 cm and range was 38.50 to 94 cm. Harvest index was 0.27 and range was 0.13 to 0.27. The highest standard deviation was found in straw weight (26.90) and the lowest in basel width of flag leaf (0.09). The highest coefficient of variation, 41.32% was obtained from the character straw weight followed by total seed yield (five plant), 37.52%, number of nodes per primary axis of inflorescence (24.42%) and percent of lodging at maturity (24.05%). Five accessions were selected based on yield for future hybridization program. The selected accessions were: BD-1419, BD-1382, BD-1392, BD-1392 and BD-1435. Finally, the seeds are preserved as active and base collections for future utilization.
