Characterization and Variability of Brinjal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Gazipur, with 56 accessions of Brinjal (Solamum melongena). Growth habit, petiol colour, leaf blade lobbing, leaf blade tip angle, leaf blade colour, thorns on stem, fruit color at commercial ripeness and seed colour showed variations. The maximum variation was observed in fruit colour at commercial ripeness such 1.79% green (1 acc.), 1.79% milk white (1 acc.), 37.5% green-milk white (21 acc.), 1.79% lilac gray (1 acc.), 12.5% purple (7 acc.), 8.92% black purple (5 acc), 17.85% green-purple (10 acc), 10.72% light green (6 acc) and 7.14% light green purple (4 acc.) followed by petiol colour such as 5.36% green (3 acc.), 3.57% greenish violet (2 acc.), 66.07% violet (37 acc.) and 25.0% dark violet (14 acc.). The highest coefficient of variation (86.46%) was obtained from number of fruits per plant followed by fruit yield per plant (62.28%) and number of seeds per fruit (54.81%).

Objectives:

i. To evaluate and utilize the collected germplasms

iv. To increase and preserve seeds in active and base collection storage

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, Joydebpur, Gazipur during winter 2005-06. Fifty six germplasm of brinjal were used in this study. The seeds were sown in the polythene bags on 10 November 2005 and transplanted in the field on 2 January 2006. The experiment was conducted in Alpha-lattice design with 3 replications. Plot size was 5m long and 1 m width. Plant to plant distance was 50 cm and bed to bed was 50 cm. During land preparation the following fertilizer and manure were mixed in field. Urea 380 kg/ha, TSP 155 kg/ha, MP 260 kg/ha, Cow dung 10 ton/ha.. Furadan was applied on the basal part of the plant. Nowine and Ribcord were applied for the controlling stem shoot borer.

Achievement/Findings:

Eleven qualitative characters were studied for 56 accessions. The accessions showed variations under individual character. The maximum variation was observed in the character of fruit colour at commercial ripeness such as 1.79% green (1 acc.), 1.79% milk white (1 acc.), 37.5% green-milk white (21 acc.), 1.79% lilac gray (1 acc.), 12.5% purple (7 acc.), 8.92% black purple (5 acc), 17.85% green-purple (10 acc), 10.72% light green (6 acc) and 7.14% light green purple (4 acc.) followed by petiol colour such as 5.36% green (3 acc.), 3.57% greenish violet (2 acc.), 66.07% violet (37 acc.) and 25.0% dark violet (14 acc.). No variability was observed in two (2) characters such as corolla colour and fruit position i.e. all accessions showed light violet corolla colour and pendant fruit position. All the accessions relating to ten important quantitative characters showed different types of variation. Number of seeds per fruit (754.88) and range (175 - 2245) followed by fruit yield per plant, mean (262.20g) and range (30 - 698g). The lowest mean value 3.91 was for the character of number of fruit per plant and range (1 – 14). The highest coefficient of variation (86.46%) was obtained from the character number of fruit per plant followed by fruit yield per plant (62.28%), number of seeds per fruit (54.81%). Percent of coefficient of variation indicated the variability among the accessions comparing within the characters. Finally, the seeds were preserved as active and base collections for future utilization.
