The study was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre with 12 accessions of vegetable soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) from AVRDC, Taiwan. Six accessions (AGS 292, AGS 383, AGS 402, AGS 403 and AGS 404) showed green pod colour and the remaining 6 accessions (AGS 399, AGS 400, AGS 401, AGS 405, BARI 4 and BARI 5) showed yellow pod colour. Days to maturity ranged from 55 to 74 days with an average of 63.33 days. The accessions produced 1st flower from 31 to 48 days. Pod weight of two seeded per 5 plants was 36.17g and the range was 19.5 to 64g. The maximum coefficient of variation was obtained from pod weight having one seeded per 5 plants (80.96%) followed by the number of pods having one seeded per 5 plants (62.76%) and percent of lodging (59.27%) among the accessions of vegetable soybean.

i. To evaluate and utilize the collected germplasms

ii. To characterize for determination of individuality in the accessions

iii.To determine the variability among the accessions

v. To increase and preserve seeds in active and base collection storage for future utilization

The study was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the spring season 2005-06. Twelve (12) germplasm of soybean were used in this study. The seeds were sown in the field on 6 February 2006.The experiment was conducted in Randomized Block design with two replications. Plot size was 3m long and 2.5 m width. Plant to plant spacing was 10 cm, bed to bed was 50 cm and number of plants per row was 25. Block to block distance was 1m and border 1 m. Sowing method was dibbling and sowing depth was 4 -5 cm. During land preparation, the following fertilizer and manure were mixed in the field: urea 60 kg/ha, TSP 175 kg/ha, MP 120 kg/ha and cow dung 10 ton/ha. Insecticide, ribcord was sprayed on the upper and lower parts of leaves for controlling of caterpillar. The vegetable soybean which was collected from AVRDC, Taiwan were different from the BARI released soybean. In fact, the yield was different due to accessions.

Qualitative character variation was observed for pod colour. Among the 12 accessions 6 accessions (AGS 292, AGS 383, AGS 402, AGS 403 AGS 404 and AGS 406) showed green pod colour and 6 accessions (AGS 399, AGS 400, AGS 401, AGS 405, BARI 4 and BARI 5) showed yellow pod colour. Among the seventeen (17) quantitative characters, the highest mean was found in days to maturity (63.33 days) followed by days to 1st flower (39.50 days) and seed weight of 5 plants having ≥ 2 seeded per pod (36.17g). The lowest mean was observed on 2-seeded pod width (0.95cm). The maximum CV was obtained from pod weight of single seeded per 5 plants (80.96%) followed by the number of pods of single seeded per 5 plants (62.76%) and percent of lodging (59.27%), and the minimum from days to maturity (11.86%). Based on the results, BARI -4 and BARI -5 produced the maximum number of pods having 0-1 seed per 5 plants (16.3 and 21.2) and number of pods having ≥ 2 seeds per 5 plants (21.9 and 32.4). In the contrary, the maximum yield was obtained in the accession AGS 383 due to 0-1 seeded pods weight per 5 plants (50g) followed by BARI -5 (38g) and AGS 292 (23g). Again, the maximum yield was found in the accession AGS 383 due to ≥ 2 seeded pods weight per 5 plants (64g) followed by AGS 383 (55g) and AGS 403 (38g).
