Assessment of Toxic Chemicals and Preservatives in Fish and Fishery Products in Bangladesh Through Chemicals Analysis.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 29 rohu (Labeo rohita) and 17 catla (Catla catla) frorn Myanmar origin were collected at 2- 3 weeks interval from several fish markets in Mymensingh. The fish were dissected into muscle, liver and intestine. Each tissue was separately tested with Tollen's reagent. In addition, a total of 27 lots of local kachki fish were collected from Mymensingh, and their whole body was tested. From the results, it is observed that all rohu and catla of Myanrnar origin were found to contain formalin only in their intestine. Tile other tissues did not show any contamination of formalin. The occurrence of formalin only in the intestine is really intriguing. More study is now underway along this line. On the other hand, formalin is also found in kachki fish, though the rate of occurrence is very poor 1%. It is learnt from the concerned sellers that kachki fish which is brought from Chittagong and other far distance, formalin is occasionally used to keep their freshness.

Objectives:

To determin the concentration level of toxic preservatives used in fish coming from India and Myanmar through illegal way; To investigat on the source of preservatives/chemicals used in fish and fishery products to keep them fresh in the market; To investigat the lethal potency and toxin properties of pesticides/insecticides used in dried fish; quantitative determination of heavy metals like arsenic, zinc, cadmium, etc in fish and shrimp tissue and in pond/lake/river water; To creat public awareness regarding the use of toxic chemicals and preservatives in fish and fishery products in Bangladesh and their exposure to human health.

Methodology:

The Indian major carps imported from India and Myanmar were collected from the market at several localities and dissected into skin, muscle, liver and gonad tissues. Each tissue was chopped thoroughly and extracted according to the method of AOAC. The extract was than centrifuged, and supernatant thus obtained was purified by different column chromatography and through YM-membrane. The extracted sample was tested by UV absorption spectrophotometer as described by AOAC. For detection of heavy metals, fish and fishery product were collected from selected markets of the country. The sizes and weights of the samples were not varied significantly from station to sampling stations (p>0.05). The tissues of fish samples were pooled in to 3 sub-samples i.e. gill, liver and muscle tissues. Metal concentrations in the samples was measured through graphite furnace techniques using a Buck 110 GF atomic absorption spectrophotometer and metal concentration was detected as µg metal/g dry weight.

Achievement/Findings:

Until now the people of the country do not know the extent of use of preservatives in imported fish and their lethal effects on human body. From Study-I, information can be gathered along this line to suggest the Government for making quarantine law in the country and to create public awareness as well for the safety of consumers. From study-II and III, similar information will be obtained regarding the hazardous dose of insecticides and heavy metals used/available in fish and fishery products for the safety of consumers.
