Both pot house and filed experiments were conducted to observe the effect of Trichoderma harzianum against foot and root rot disease caused by soil-borne pathogens such as Sclerotium rolsfii and Fusarium oxysporum of lentil. From this study it is observed that soil amendment with Tricho-compost is the best treatments in reducing seedling mortality and in increasing plant growth and yield of lentil which was significantly differed from the other treatments including control both in pot and field condition at Gazipur and Madaripur. Seed treatment with chemical fungicide Provax showed better performance against the disease which was more or less similar effect as seed treatments with Trichoderma spores suspension that significantly reduced seedling mortality and increased plant growth and yield oflentil compared to control.

To find out the cost-effective formulation of Trichoderma harzianum against foot and root rot disease of lentil.

The pot experiment was conducted in the pot house of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Two field experiments, one was conducted in the field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur and the other was in the field of Pulses Research Center, Madaripur. There were 6 treatments viz. (i) Seed treatment with Provax, (ii) Trichoderma spore suspension-1, (iii) Trichoderma spore suspension-2; (iv) Soil amendment with Tricho-compost-1, and (v) Tricho-compost-2 and (vi) Untreated control. The unit plot size was 2.5 m x 3m. RCB design was followed with 3 replications and the pot experiment was CRD with 4 replications. T. harzianum was multiplied in the mixture of khesari and wheat bran with mustard oilcake substrates. The formulated Trichoderma was used to mass multiplication in two different cow dung based compost designated Trico-compost-1 and Trico-compost-2. T. harzianum were cultured in PDA and PBD media and spores were harvested 10 days old cultured and were used for seed treatments. In case of pot experiment, sterilized tray soil was inoculated with S. rolfsii and F. oxysporum at 20gkg-1 soil cultured in wheat bran + khesari bran + MOC substrates. Inoculated soil was incubated for 10 days maintaining proper soil moisture. The inoculated soil was treated with Tricho-compost @200 g kg-1 soil before seed sowing. One hundred seeds of lentil var. BARI Masur-5 were sown in one tray. In case of filed experiments, soil was inoculated with S. rolfsii and F. oxysporum colonized substrates @ 100g/m2 soil before seed sowing. Tricho-composts were added @ 3 t ha-1 after inoculation with pathogens. Seeds were treated with Provax @ 2.5 g kg-1 seeds before seed sowing. Data were collected on seedling mortality; shoot height, shoot weight, root length and root weight. The yield of lentil was also recorded.

In the pot experiment, all the treatments gave significantly higher seed germination. The height seedling mortality 34.00% was recorded in control. Seedling mortality was lower range from 5.67 to 9.00% in other treatments. But significant difference among the treatments was not observed. Soil amendment with Tricho-composts gave the higher shoot height, shoot weight, root length and root weight followed by seed treatment with Trichoderma inocula and Provax compared to control. In the field experiments, the highest seedling mortality 30.67% at Gazipur and 20.17% at Madaripur was found in control treatment. Soil amendment with Tricho-compost-2 gave the lower seedling mortality 6.33% at Gazipur and 11.46% at Madaripur followed by seed treatments with Provax, soil amendment with Tricho-compost-1 and seed treatments with Trichoderma spores suspension but significant differences among the treatments was not observed. Soil amendments with Tricho-compost performed to be the better in increasing shoot height, shoot weight, root length and root weight which was significantly differed from other treatments along with control. The highest yield of chickpea 1573 kg ha-1 at Gazipur and 1134 kg ha-1 was recorded in Tricho-compost-2 treated plot followed by Tricho-compost-1, seed treatment with Provax and Trichoderma inocula-1 and 2. Yield was higher 27.93% at Gazipur and 22.84% at Madaripur compared to control due to application of Tricho-compost-2 where as it was 25.06% at Gazipur and 20.45% at Madaripur due to seed treatment with Provax. Soil amendments with Tricho-compost-1 gave higher yield 25.68% at Gazipur and 17.14% at Madaripur where it was 12.04% and 10.56% at Gazipur and 9.04% and 15.05% at Madaripur by seed treatments with Trichoderma inocula-1 and 2, respectively compared to control.
