Biodiversity and Conservation of Riverine Fisheries of Selected Rivers of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In winter, total plankton ranged from 3100 to 44800 no/l. Among them phytoplankton were 95%. In summer total plankton ranged from 2000-30500 no/l. Among them 80% is phytoplankton. The major groups of phytoplankton were Chlorophyceae, Myxophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Zooplanktons comprises Copepods, Rotifers, Cladocera and Turbellaria. Benthos concentration was ranged from 825-2000 no./m² during winter. In summer it was varied from 650-4213 no./m². The following groups and species were identified. Snails: Goniobasis, Pleurocera, Hydrobia, Lymnaea, Viviparus, Planorbis, Amnicola, Gyraulus, Campiloma, Viviparus faciatus, Physa, Clams: Pisidium, Margaritifera, Sphaerium, Anodonta Unio. Others: Chironomus larvae(Red blood), Chironomus larvae (others), Nematoda, Oligochaeta, Polychaeta, Bristle worm, Coleopteran larvae, Dragon fly nymph, Stone fly nymph.

Objectives:

The main objectives of this project is to recommend management and conservation strategies for fisheries of the river Meghna. Within this main objective, the specific objectives are as follows: Collection and identification of available fish species to prepare checklist for the river Meghna; identificatio of commercially important fish species, their breeding season and areas; categorization of fish species of river Meghna according to ecological status (abundant, rare, threatened/endangered etc.), feeding habit (planktivore omnivore, carnivore, etc.) and spawning requirements (peleagophils, phytophils, lithophils etc.); and recommendation of management and conservation guidelines for the river Meghna.

Methodology:

Extensive river trips was made to collect samples from the selected site of the River Meghna. Fishes were collected from commercial catch of fishermen and by experimental fishing. Ecological status of fishes (abundant, rare, threatened, extinct) were done on the basis of availability. In this regard, a questionnaire was developed to collect information, field visits were also made to each site, and fishermen were interviewed in those locations. Spawning grounds and season of different fish species were identified on the basis of presence of spawn/fry/fingerlings and brood fishes. Plankton and benthos sampling were done following standard methods. Hydrological parameters such as colour, depth, transparency, current and water temperature were monitored on monthly basis.

Following outputs may be considered to assess the success of the project: A checklist of available fish species; recommendations for management and conservation of fisheries the river Meghna; and increased fish speies diversity, density and production after implementing the recommended guidelines.
