Study on the Jag/katha Fishery of the River Dakatia, Chandpur in Context to Fish Sanctuary

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jag/katha fishing involves the encircling of a jag/katha by a seine net with fixed bamboo poles (at an intervals synchronized with lunar cycle) and left for 1-2 days. Usually 4-5 persons are involved in operation. After encircling all the tree branches and the water hyacinth cover is removed. Big fishes are caught by using cast nets. Lastly the encircling net is slowly moved into a smaller and smaller circle by hand and pushed into mud to prevent the escape of smaller fishes and prawns. It usually takes 2-3 days to fish a jag/katha but may take 7-10 days depending on its size. After 2-3 days the jag/katha may be rebuilt. Standing crop was estimated in jag/katha from 85 kg/h to 1500 kg/ha with a mean water depth of 1.25 m.

Objectives:

Study of catch composition and their category (% of broods, % of sub-adults, % prawns, % of riverine and resident species) and species diversity of jag/katha; comparative study of fish availability between within and outside the jag/katha to identify and ensure the use of jag/katha as shelter by different fish and prawn species, the Chandpur Irrigation Project area, between present and earlier investigations and the Dakatia and other rivers (if comparable data are available); study the nature and types of jag/katha materials (bamboo and tree branch's species, attracting/lure materials, etc.) on fish and prawn aggregation and its relation with jag/katha dimension, placement and harvesting schedule, season, etc.; and recommend possible jag/katha materials, placement, dimension and fish attracting materials as fish refuges to be used in open water fish sanctuaries.

Methodology:

Regular fish sampling of jag/katha were done at monthly intervals through field visits and by monitoring jag harvesting on the spot to determine catch composition, species diversity, jag/katha material and lure ingredients. Fishers were also interviewed to know their present day's catch and their previous day's fishing activities. Generally, the potential fishers were interviewed using prescribed questionnaire from each area. As the respondents may not maintain the records of previous day's catch data were based on the memory of the respondent fisherman. While the weight of present day's catch was weighed in kg by a pan balance and grouped according to species. Fish/prawn samples collected from the jag/katha will first be separated according to species and weighed in groups by species. Length and weight of big specimens were recorded in the field.

Achievement/Findings:

Empirical data gathered from the study of jag/kath fishery can be simulated to enhance fish refuge/aggregation in the already established and future proposed open water fish sanctuaries of the country. In other words, study results will obviously help to recommend possible jag/katha material, placement and dimension, fish attracting materials as fish refuges/shelters to be used in open water fish sanctuaries throughout the country.
