Investigation on Natural Spawning of Major Carps in the River Halda, Chittagong, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 72 fish species of freshwater and estuarine origin inhabits the river Halda, among them major carps are dominant. About 15 species are considered extinct as these are not found for last 20 years. Major carps usually breed in the river Halda during May-June when meteorological parameters are favourable and breeding occurred during full-moon or new-moon. Generally brood release eggs at the time between end of high tide and starting of low tide, when water apparently become motionless. Water level fluctuates between 0.5 and 1.5 m during high and low tides. Ideal meterological conditions for major carp spawning includes heavy monsoon shower for 5 to 10 hours, lightening/thunder, wave, high water current, turbulence and optimum water temperature (27-29⁰C). Composition of spawn was dominated by C. catla (87%) and negligible amount of L. rohita and C. cirrhosu were found, but no spawn of L. gonious and L. calbasu were found.

Objectives:

To Collect of geo-morphological data related to spawning habitats of major carps (e.g. erosion, siltation, submerged sand bars, depth) on the river Halda;

Methodology:

Data on hydrological parameters such as flooding time, flood pulse, water level, nature of water current and wave, turbulence and tidal effect of the River Halda were collected from the Department of Hydrology, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Chittagong. Geo-morphological data on rates of erosion and siltation, number of submerged sand bars, depth at different sites were collected through spot visit. Information on migration patterns and routes of major carps fishes in the river Halda and its feeder canals were collected by spot interviewing the analysis of catch composition of local fishermen. Information on fish species diversity in the River Halda were also collected by analysing catch of local fishermen. In this regard, frequent visit were made to different markets along side of the River Halda. In addition, senior commercial fishermen were interviewed. Information on spawning period (month, new moon, full moon) and time (day, night) of major carps in the River Halda were collected from the Directorate of Fisheries, Chittagong.

Achievement/Findings:

Knowledge on geo-morphological changes, hydrology, meteriological parameters, magnitude of water pollution, fish species diversity, position of broods stocks, migration pattern and routes, current spawn production in the river Halda will help to formulate a strategy for the management of fish and fisheries; formulated management strategy will ensure spawning success and production of major carps in the river Halda; moreover, formulated management strategy will help to conserve the only available natural spawning habitat of major carps in Bangladesh; and this will also create employment opportunities for the unemployed youths in Halda river area and will protect loss of biodiversity.
