Characterization of Musk Melon

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with 96 accessions of musk melon (Cucumis melo L.) at Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur during summer 2006-2007. Among the 96 accessions, few characters such as fruit shape, fruit skin texture, fruit skin colour and design, ridge on the skin and flesh colour showed distinct variability. The maximum variation was found in fruit skin colour and design under 6 groups viz. 21% green, 8% speckled, 44% spotted blotch, 22% dark green, 4% glazy and light blotch and 1% cream among the accessions. The accessions were exhibited 2% ellipsoid, 65% oblong ellipsoid, 16% globular, 15% stem-end tapered and 3% blossom-end tapered fruit shape.

Objectives:

(i) To study the genetic variability

(ii) To identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another

(iii)To identify the promising accessions for varietal development

(iv) To increase seeds for conservation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during summer 2006-2007. Ninety six accessions were taken for this study. Observations were recorded on 11 qualitative characters as per IBPGR Cucurbitaceae descriptor. The seeds were sown in the polythene bags and subsequently, transplanted in the field on 21 April 2007. Bed size was 2x2 m², plot to plot distance was1m, block to block-1m, number of seedling/pit was 1 and border-1m. Five plants of each accession were sown in the field. Cow dung-15 ton/ha, urea-150 kg, TSP-125 kg, MP-100 kg/ha were applied in the field.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the 96 accessions, some characters showed distinct variability and some were morphologically similar based on the qualitative character. The data were recorded before fruit maturity stage. All the accessions showed green cotyledon, dented leaf margin, presence of tendril, angular stem shape, yellow flower and monocious sex type. All accessions showed variations in fruit shape, fruit skin texture, fruit skin colour and design, ridge on the skin and flesh colour. There are also found sub group of the traits for qualitative characters. The maximum variation was observed in the character fruit skin colour and design. Among the total accessions (96.), these were 21% green, 8% speckled, 44% spotted blotch, 22% dark green, 4% glazy and light blotch and 1% cream skin. There were 2% ellipsoid, 66% oblong ellipsoid, 16% globular, 15% stem-end tapered and 3% blossom-end tapered fruit shape among the musk melon accessions. Smooth 24%, grainy 1%, deep wrinkled 26%, shallow wavy 17% and medium wrinkled 32% fruit skin texture were found. In case of ridged on fruit skin and flesh thickness both showed minimum variability. Ridged on fruit skin showed 29% deep ridge, 32% medium ridge and absent 39%. About flesh thickness, there were 9% thick flesh, 21% medium and 70% thin flesh. Accordingly, gene source of the morphological characters to be preserved in gene bank to supply seeds needed by users.
