A field experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during Kharif 1 (summer) season 2004 and 2005 to find out the performance of BARI bed-planter, BARI-seeder, BARI-weeder and to minimize the yield loss due to excessive soil moisture in sesame field. Nine treatments viz., T1 = Plain land + broadcast seeding + No weeding (control), T2 = Plain land + broadcast seeding + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE), T3 = Plain land + seeding with BARI-seeder + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE), T4 = Raised bed by hand + broadcast seeding + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE), T5 = Raised bed by hand + line sowing + weeding by BARI- weeder (at 10 and 20 DAE), T6 = BARI bed-planter + weeding with BARI-weeder (at 10 and 20 DAE), T7 = BARI bed- planter +2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE), T8 = BARI bed planter + row seeding by hand + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE) and T9 = BARI bed-planter + broadcast sowing + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE) were included in the study. In 2004, significantly highest grain yield (1.34 t/ha) was obtained from T8 = which was identical to T7 (1.33 t/ha), T3 (1.25 t/ha) and T4 (1.23 t/ha) and the lowest grain yield (0.85 t/ha) was obtained from T1. In 2005, the highest grain yield was obtained from T7 (1.37 t/ha) which was identical to T8 (1.31 t/ha), T4 (1.26 t/ha) and T9 (1.24 t/ha). Whether the sowing technique it was, hand weeding coupled with raised bed (T4) or bed making by BARI bed-planter (T8) or Bed-planting (T7) found better. BARI weeder weeding did not show expected performance. Economically, T7 and T3 in 2004 and T7 in 2005 showed their better performance though the overall economic performance of all the treatments was very poor.

  2. To study the effectiveness of BARI-seeder, Bed-planter, and BARI-weeder as compared to normal and raised bed seeding in sesame cultivation.

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during Kharif 1 (summer) season 2004 and 2005. The land was medium high and the soil was clay loam in texture. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design following three replications. Nine different treatments viz., T1= Plain land + broadcast seeding + no weeding (control), T2= Plain land + broadcast seeding + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE), T3= Plain land + BARI-seeder + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE), T4= Raised bed by hand + broadcast seeding + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE), T5= Raised bed by hand + line sowing + BARI-weeder (at 10 and 20 DAE), T6= BARI bed-planter + BARI-weeder (at 10 and 20 DAE), T7 = BARI bed-planter + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE), T8= BARI bed-planter + row seeding by hand + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE) and T9= BARI bed-planter + broadcast sowing + 2 hand weeding (at 10 and 20 DAE) were included in the study. The unit plot size was 6m x 5m. BARI Til 3 was used as the test crop. The bed was prepared and the crop was sown as per treatment mentioned above. The crop was sown on 25 March in 2004 and 20 March in 2005 and harvested on 24 June in 2004 and 22 June in 2005. In case of line sowing, a 30 cm apart row was maintained and seeds were sown in solid lines. The crop was fertilized with 60-70-30-20-2-2 kg N-P2O5-K2O-S-Zn-B/ha. The entire amount of P2O5, K2O, S, Zn, B and half of N were applied during final land preparation. The rest N was top dressed at 30 days after emergence (DAE) following irrigation. Weeding cum thinning was done on 10 and 20 DAE. Weed samples were taken during this time. Two irrigation were given at 28 and 60 DAE. No water logging was occurred for why seedling mortality due to water logging was not observed. Data on yield and yield contributing characters were taken and statistically analyzed. The mean values were adjusted by DMRT.
