Arthropod Diversity Within in Different Treatments Plots

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Plots managed with the LCC, and using no insecticides had higher numbers of arthropod natural enemies and pests than insecticide treated plot with farmers’ usual urea applications. Farmers can simply cease insecticide applications without yield loss. Farmers do not need to apply insecticide on T. Aman and Boro rice under normal circumstances. The only possible exception may be during severe pest outbreaks as defined by BRRI and determined by DAE. Farmers can save an average of Tk 1000 per season by eliminating insecticide applications and optimizing urea applications, this is sufficient to purchase 1 additional month of rice for a family of 5.

Objectives:

To study the abundance pattern and the richness of taxonomic categories of Arthropods

Methodology:

Experiment was conducted to study the abundance pattern and the richness of taxonomic categories. Simpson’s diversity index was used (Simpson 1949). Treatment plots were- Spray (T₁), No Spray (T₂), LCC+Spray (T₃), LCC+No Spray (T₄), FP+Spray (T₅) and FP+No Spray (T₆) were studied in farmers’ fields of Aladipara village of Pirgacha upazila under Rangpur district during December, 2003 to May, 2004 in boro season. Sampling was done at three stages (seedling stage, mid tillering stage and reproductive stage) by sweep net. LCC X insecticide matrix experiments were sampled for arthropods at 3 crop stages: maximum tillering, milk and reproductive stages.

The “LCC, no insecticide” treatment had the highest numbers of arthropod natural enemies and pests. The diversity of different insect pests and their natural enemies in six types of management practices (treatments) Twelve different species of insect pests and 12 different species of natural enemies were recorded from the rice fields. Diversity indices of insect pests and natural enemies differed according to treatments and crop growth stages. In the case of insect pests, T₁ and T₂ showed the highest diversity index (0.71) at the reproductive stage and T₂ at the mid tillering stage. The highest richness (4.31) and the highest evenness (0.96) in T₁ were at mid-tillering stage. The highest equitability was found in T₄ at both seedling and mid-tillering stage (0.36) for insect pests. In the case of natural enemies, Spray showed the highest diversity index (0.79) at mid-tillering stage. Similarly, T₁ exhibited highest richness (5.06) at mid-tillering stage. T₆exhibited highest evenness (0.86) at mid tillering stage. The highest equitability was found in T₃ at mid tillering stage (0.63) for natural enemies.
