Relationship Between Rice Hispa Damage and Yield Loss

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Relationship between rice hispa grub damage and yield loss of rice was estimated in two growth stages i. e., maximum tillering and booting stage of rice at BRRI farm during Boro 2003-04 and found that rice hispa infestation at maximum tillering and booting stages caused 41% and 32% yield loss, respectively. Rice hispa infestation reduced leaf and straw weight which ultimately reduced grain yield.

Methodology:

Relationship between rice hispa grub damage and yield loss of rice was estimated in two growth stages i. e., maximum tillering and booting stage of rice at BRRI farm during Boro 2003-04. A 180 m² field was divided in to 9 plots of 20 m² (5m x 4m )area. The plots were arranged in 3 blocks. Ten hills of each plot was covered with a nylon cage. Hispa beetles were released in each hill @10 beetles/hill. The beetles were allowed to lay eggs for 5 nights and the adults were then removed. In each block a plot was kept free from hispa damage and was considered as the control. After hatching, grubs were allowed to feed on rice leaf in natural conditions.

Achievement/Findings:

On an average 70% leaf damage occurred at both maximum tillering and booting stages. There was no significant difference in numbers of tillers and leaves per hill, and leaf weight per hill. Average straw weight (13.12g/hill) and leaf+straw weight (21.56g/hill) were highest in control plots compared to infested plots at both crop stages. Average grain yield was highest (26.69 g/hill) in control plots followed by the plots infested at maximum tillering (15.78g/hill ) and booting stage (18.20g/hill). Results indicate that on an average 41% and 32% yield loss occurred when infestation was done at maximum tillering and booting stages, respectively.
