Due to environmental changes and intensive cultivation, outbreaks of insect pests is most common. To control this outbreaks new insecticides are essential. Every year different commercial formulations of insecticides are imported from different companies for registration. The experiments were conducted  to evaluate the commercial formulations of insecticides against different insect pest of rice. The experiment were laid out in a CRD with four replications and the individual plot size was 20 m2 (4m X 5m). One hour after spraying ten 3rd-4th instar BPH nymphs or adult rice hispa beetle were confined by mylar film cage on each of four randomly selected rice hills. Each hill represented a replication. The granular insecticides were broadcasted one day before infestation. Mortality of insects was counted at 24 and 48 hours after treatment (HAT) and results were adjusted by Abbott's formula. For yellow stemborer trial, four randomly selected rice hills/plot were separately infested with YSB egg masses. Each hill represented a replication. One day after hatching insecticides were applied. The dead hearts were counted 20 days after insecticides application.A total of 53 commercial formulations of 16 generic products were tested against brown planthopper (BPH), rice hispa ( RH) and yellow stemborer (YSB). Among them 29 formulations (11 generic products) against BPH, 29 against RH and 6 (4 generic products) against SB were found effective (giving more than 80% mortality). Forty seven commercial formulations of insecticides were tested against BPH, YSB, RH and GM. Among them 12 against BPH, 10 against YSB, 14 against RH and two  against GM were found effective.

To test efficacy of insecticides against major insect pest of rice

Thirty-seven commercial formulations of insecticides were tested against brown planthopper, yellow stem borer, rice hispa and gall midge. Brown planthopper: Twelve foliar and four granular insecticides were evaluated against BPH. Among the insecticides four were tested in T.Aman 2003 and twelve in Boro 2004 seasons. Each insecticide was applied in a 20 m2 plot. The experiments were laid out in a CRD with three replications. A registered insecticide available in the market was included as standard check. One hour after spraying, ten 2nd-3rd instars BPH nymphs were confined by mylar film cage on three randomly selected rice hills per plot. The granular insecticides were broadcasted on paddy water five days before infestation. Mortality was counted at 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment (HAT) and results were adjusted by Abbott’s formula. Rice hispa: Seventeen insecticides including one granular were evaluated against rice hispa in 20 m2 plot with three replications. The experimental design and methodology were similar to that of the BPH trial. Yellow stem borer: The trials were conducted in 20 m2 plots following RCB design with three replications at BRRI farm, Gazipur and farmer's field at Horirumpur of Sherpur district. In BRRI farm, four YSB eggmasses were placed in four hills (one eggmass/hill) in each plot when the egg masses were at hatching initiation stage. Each insecticide was sprayed two to three days after hatching in the field. Granular insecticide was applied after placing of egg-mass in the hill. Dead heart number was counted 25-30 days after spraying. In Sherpur, first application of insecticides was applied on seeing the abundance of stemborer moths in the field. The second application was done 20 days after first application. Ten days after each application, stem borer infested and uninfested tillers of all infested hills were counted from alternate rows of each plot and percent dead heart damage were calculated. Gall midge: A trial was conducted in T.Aman 2003 season at Horirumpur of Sherpur district with one foliar and one granular insecticides. The experimental design and methodology were similar to that of the YSB trial.

Twelve insecticides out of 16 were found effective (gave more than 80 % mortality) against BPH. Fourteen insecticides out of 17 were found effective against rice hispa. Ten insecticides out of 12 were found effective against yellow stem borer reducing dead heart 80% and above.The two insecticides were proved effective reducing onion shoot 80% and above.
