Comparison of Different Bait Combinations to Attract Rats to Live Traps in Rice Fields at the Reproductive Phase.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The response of rats to different bait combinations were tested in the T. Aman 2003 and Boro 2004 seasons at BRRI farm, Gazipur to identify appropriate rat control technique as well as their control in relation to crop stage. Each type of bait combination was replicated in three live traps. All the baits were wrapped by a piece of white nylon net and placed at random near active barrows in paddy fields. Traps were set in the field in the evening and checked the next morning. The animal trapped at each trap was examined and identified. A total of 97 animals were captured in the live trap, of which 92 were rats and the rest were shrew and grey mongose. Bandicota bengalensis dominated (59.8%) over the Rattus rattus (38.2%). Rattus rattus was the dominant species near permanent infrastructures. Rat bait composed of clean rice and coconut oil attracted more rats.

Methodology:

The response of rats to different bait combinations (paddy grain, paddy grain + coconut oil, clean rice + coconut oil and clean rice grind + coconut oil) was tested in the T. Aman 2003 and Boro 2004 seasons at BRRI farm, Gazipur. Tests were conducted at the reproductive phase of rice crops using the single capture live-traps. Trapping was continued for 63 consecutive nights in T. Aman 2003 and 75 nights in Boro 2004. Each type of bait combination was replicated in three live traps. All the baits were wrapped by a piece of white nylon net and placed at random near active barrows in paddy fields. Traps were set in the field in the evening and checked the next morning. The animal trapped at each trap was examined and identified.

Achievement/Findings:

Fourtythree three animals were trapped in different bait trap during the T. Aman 2003. Among them 42 were rats and one was shrew. Of the rats, 25 were Rattus rattus, 16 were Bandicota bengalensis and one was B. indica. In the Boro 2004, 54 animals were trapped of which 50 were rats, three shrews and one grey mongoose. B. bengalensis was the dominant rat species (39 out of 50 rats) and R. rattus was present comparatively in low population densities. Predator like grey mongoose was active in the irrigated rice ecosystem. In both seasons, 55 trapped rats were B. bengalensis and 37 were R. rattus. The overall trap success was 5.7% and 6% in T. Aman 2003 and Boro 2004, respectively. It was also observed that traps placed in rice fields, close to the storehouse, office buildings, pump house or other permanent infrastructure captured maximum number of R. rattus (16) in T. Aman 2003 whereas traps placed in rice fields, far from permanent structures captured more B. benglensis in Boro 2004. Among the baits, clean rice with coconut oil attracted maximum number of rats in both seasons. Therefore, clean rice grind or paddy grain with coconut oil can be used as a good bait in live trap for trapping B. bengalensis and R. rattus in rice field.
