Pathology of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a Cat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present paper describes a case of hepatocellular carcinoma in a cat diagnosed by gross and histopathological examinations. The cat deteriorated gradually with the development of ascites, declining body weight, low hematocrit value and ultimately died. Histopathologically, the neoplastic growth of the liver was characterized by no portal triads associated with solid, trabecular and acinar pattern growth of hepatocytes with vacuolar degeneration in the cytoplasm. The neoplastic hepatocytes were characterized by round nuclei, prominent nucleoli, acidophilic cytoplasm with infrequent mitoses and hyperchromatic nuclei. Other features in- cluded hemorrhage, necrosis and mild connective tissue proliferation around the tumor mass. Metastasis to other organs were not recorded in the present case and it was diagnosed as a differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma with local invasiveness

Objectives:

To the histopathology of a locally invasive hepatocellular carcinoma in a cat.

Methodology:

Clinical History: A Japanese domestic, sapyed female, 13 years old cat developed a mass at L₃ mammary gland which remained constant in size for 2 years. After operation of the mass, the histopathological diagnosis was made as mammary gland adenocarcinoma. The operative wound at the inguinal region did not heal completely. Recurrence of tumor cells was found by examination of swab taken from the pocket. The second operation was performed in the same area. Histopathological examination of the operated mass showed inflammatory granulation tissue. The wound became better gradually. Four months latter of the second operation, she developed ascites with declining body weight and low hematocrit value. Examination of ascitic fluid revealed aggregation of tumor cells and ultimately the cat died. The cat was subjected to detailed postmortem examination.

Histopathology: Almost all the tissue samples were collected in 10 % buffered formalin solution, fixed and processed routinely through ascending ethanol series and toluene, and embedded in paraffin. About 4 urn thick sections were deparaffinized in xylene and ethanol and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H & E), periodic acid Schiff and Masson's trichrome stainings. Results

Virus and nitrosamine are thought to be related to hepatocellular carcinoma in human and animals (Moulton, 1990). No clue related to etiology was found in the present case. Sometimes immunohistochemistry is needed to confirm the undifferentiated tumors. Figure legends: 1. Liver of the cat showing the tumor mass in the left lateral and left medial lobes. 1.
