Fertilizer Management in Late Jute Seed Crop with Winter Vegetables

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Inter-cropping of late jute seed production with winter vegetables is an established practice in the country. Different crop uptake different amounts of nutrients from the soil leaving it as a depleted state and the nutrient requirement of inter/mixed cropping system are still unknown. Therefore, the experiment has been undertaken to find out the optimum dose of fertilizer for maximum output as well as to keep the soil fit for the years to come. From the results, it was observed that different treatment response on the plant height, number of branches and yield of jute seed as there are no highly significant treatment differences. Highest plant height was found with 1.50 times of RDF (recommended dose of fertilizer) over control and all their treatments. Highest number of branches/plant and seed yield found in crop combination late jute seed + red amaranth with the fertilizer rate 1.50 times of RDF.

Objectives:

To recommend a fertilizer combination of late jute seed in inter- cropping with winter vegetables

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted to find out the optimum dose of fertilizer for late jute seed in inter cropping with winter vegetables and to keep the soil health sustainable. It was laid out in split plot design with 3 replications; crops in main plot and fertilizer in the sub plot. The crop combinations were: (C1) jute sole, (C2) jute + raddish, (C3) jute + tomato (C4) jute + red amaranth (C5) jute + raddish + red amaranth (C6) jute + tomato + red amaranth and the fertilizer doses (kg/ha) were (F₁) control (100-30-10-20-4 as N-P-K-S-Zn) (F₂) ¾ th of the control (F₃) 1.25 of the control (F₄) 1.5 of the control. The seed rate used: jute 2.5kg/ha, raddish 9.0 kg/ha, tomato 0.15 kg/ha, red amaranth 1.5 kg/ha. Plot size was 3.0m x 3.0m with a space of 1.0m around each plot. The drain was 9 inch deep around each block. One third of the total N and full amount of PKS and Zn were applied at final land preparation. The 2nd 1/3 rd of N were top dressed after15-20 days after sowing and the rest 1/3 of N were applied at 30-35 days after sowing.

Achievement/Findings:

For sole late jute seed production updating of fertilizer recommendation may be needed. In all the crop combinations 1.5 RDF i.e. 150-45-15-30-6 N-P-K-S-Zn kg/ha may be recommended.
