Effect of Different Sources of Non Conventional Organic Matter on the Production of Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An attempt has been undertaken to study the effect of sewage sludge, poultry litter, and rice straw on the growth and yield of jute in field condition. The result showed that highest biomass, plant height, base diameter with all the treatments of organic matter over the RDF. Highest biomass (23.56t/ha) found with poultry litter @ 5t/ha, sewage sludge 5 t/ha contributed highest yield of fibre (2.61 t/ha) and plant height (2.67m). Base diameter (15.54mm) obtained with cowdung 5 t/ha. However in relation to fibre production the treatment may be arranged in order of T₅>T₃>T₄>T₂>T₆>T_1. In case of fibre quality, the most fine fibre obtained with poultry litter followed sewage sludge, cowdung, rice straw and RDF. Highest brightness (37.50%) and bundle strength (11.30Ib/mg) found with poultry litter over the control and RDF. Study revealed that organic materials application enhance the quality of fibre.

Objectives:

To study the effect non conventional organic matters on fibre production and quality of O-9897 to improve soil fertility

Methodology:

The trial was set up at AEZ No. 8 under sonatola series in RCBD with three replications. The size of the unit plot was 3.0m x 3.0m having plot to plot and block to block distance of one meter. There were six treatments as follows: T₁ (control), T₂ (rice straw @ 5t/ha), T₃ (poultry litter @ 5t/ha), T₄ (cowdung @ 5t/ha), T₅ (sewage sludge @ 5t/ha) and T₆ (RDF). The popular jute variety O-9897 was sown in 1st week of April. Air dried poultry manure, sewage sludge and small chopped dried rice straw incorporated to soil according to treatments. Chemical fertilizers were applied as per treatments before final leveling of soil. All other chemical fertilizer were applied as full dose except N (Urea). The N fertilizer was appied in two equal splits, one at final land preparation (sowing date) and the other at 42 days after sowing. Cultural practices weeding, thinning, hoeing, spraying were done. The experiment was harvested in 1st week of August. Different data in field condition has been taken. Harvest plants were retted in treatment wise. After proper retting fibre was extracted and dried in the sun. Needful data of fibre was recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Sewage sludge @ 5t/ha would be a good practice for fibre production of O-9897. Poultry litter respond to brightness and bundle strength and fibre fineness.
