Magnesium is a secondary essential nutrient plays a vital role in chlorophyll formation. Its deficiency causes reduction of growth and yield of any crop. Therefore an investigation was made to observed the performance of jute in the soil of Rangpur. Results showed that plant height, base diameter, fibre and stick yield were not increased significantly with addition of Mg to recommended dose of fertilizer. Fibre yield was increased slightly with the addition of Mg to RDF as in RDF + 2.0 Mg Kg/ha and RDF + 4.0 Mg kg/ha. This increase of fibre yield was not significant in comparison to RDF. This indicates that soil Mg level was sufficient to supplement the crop to obtain its highest fibre yield.

To establish the effect of Mg on growth and yield of tossa jute.

The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with seven treatments. The test variety used O-9897. These are (i) control, (ii) RDF (NPKS) (iii) RDF + 1.0 Mg kg/ha (iv) RDF + 2.0 Mg Kg/ha (v) RDF + 4.0 Mg kg/ha (vi) RDF + 8.0 Mg kg/ha (vii) RDF + 10.0 Mg kg/ha. Plot size was 3.0m x 3.0m with a space of 1.0m around each plot. Except nitrogen other fertilizers were applied at the time of sowing. The N fertilizer was splited in two parts. One at sowing and other at 45 days after sowing.

Rangpur soil magnesium content is sufficient for fibre yield and gross return found highest with treated by RDF + 4.0 Mg kg/ha.
