Study of Chemical Composition of All Released and Prospective Clones of BTRI and Assessment of Its Quality Status

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tea clones exhibit a lot of properties and appears with different specialty in the area quality, flavor, yield and so on. The quality can be considered by virtue of several properties namely- Theaflavin (TF) & Thearubigin (TR) content, total liquor colour (TLC), high polymerized substances (HPS) and percent of brightness (% of B) , caffeine content, crude fiber content, water soluble ash, acid insoluble ash. Hence, an assessment can be done on the biochemical properties, of all clones released so far from BTRI.

Objectives:

To determine the chemical composition of all released and prospective clones considering the quality index.

Methodology:

All the BTRI released clones (16) were collected for the estimation of biochemical contents. The quality of different tea clones was determined considering the Theaflavin (TF) & Thearubigin (TR) content, total liquor colour (TLC), high polymerized substances (HPS) and percent of brightness (% of B), caffeine content, crude fiber content, water soluble ash, acid insoluble ash of tea.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that total theaflavins (TF), total thearubigins (TR), total liquor colour (TLC), high polymerized substances (HPS) and percent of brightness (% of B) had been analyzed for the BTRI released 16 clones and TV1. Among these clones BT1 was the best followed by BT4, BT6, (TV1), BT17, BT8, BT10, BT5, BT16, BT11, BT2, BT9, BT12, BT15, BT13, and BT14 with respect to TF. Range of TR content was 5.28 to 16.73%. BT7 has got highest quantity of TR. BT16, BT4, BT9 and BT1 have got the highest level of TLC (4.44), HPS (7.094), percent of brightness 28.13 and TF/TR ratio (0.247) respectively.
