Studies on the Physical Properties of Different Types of Blended Yarn with Respect to the Higher Utility of Jute in the Blend.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the yarn and Fabric Production Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the year of 2008 to 2009. The aim of this work is to use the maximum amount of jute in blend that is why the blend is performed from jute:cotton/50:50 to jute:cotton/8:20. Blending is an important factor for producing a particular count of quality yarn. A study on the jute cotton blended yarn of different ratios viz. Jute:Cotton/50:50, Jute:Cotton/60:40, Jute:Cotton/70:30 and Jute :Cotton/80:20 were performed in this experiment. From the results of three different counts of yarn (20s,15s and 10s), it is observed that the 10s yarn of jute:cotton/80:20 shows better results than that the other two types of yarns of the same blend ratios. It is also seen that the properties of the blended yarn are increasing from higher count to lower count.

Objectives:

Production of different types of blended yarn and 100% cotton yarn and compare the physical properties in respect to the higher utility of Jute in blend.

Methodology:

Bangladesh White B (BWB) jute fiber was collected and cotton fiber of one-inch staple length is collected from the Cotton Development Board, Bangladesh.The BWB jute fiber is stapled into 1.5inch in a cutting machine.Then the stapled jute is chemically modified (softened and whitened) in the chemical modification chamber at Jute and Textile Protect Development Center (JTPDC) in BJRI, Dhaka.The chemically modified jute is dried and opened.The chemically modified jute is ready for blended with cotton.The jute cotton blend of required ratio is performed in the blow room. Before entering the blending chamber a stack mixing process is carried for homogeneous blending of jute and cotton.Then the sliver is prepared for the individual count (20s,15s and 10s) of blended yarn are produced in the end spinning frame of a private Textile Mill.The blend ratio of jute:cotton were 80:20,70:30,60:40 and 50:50 respectively for each type of blended yarn.Yarn properties like strength, thick and thin places, twist per inch (TPI)and count strength product(CSP)were measured under standard condition.

Achievement/Findings:

The properties like thick and thin place, CV%, hairiness of 80:20/jute:cotton are very high in comparison to the properties of 50:50/jute:cotto yarn. At the same time the properties like TPI, strength and CSP of 80:20/jute:cotton are also low in comparison to the 50:50/jute:cotton blend. Here all the properties are increasing with the increase of cotton in the blend. It is observed the properties like thick and thin places, CV% and hairiness of 80:20 and other blend ratio are also higher then the 50:50/jute:cotton 15 count blended yarn but the irregularities are decreasing in a befitting manner with the increase of cotton in the blend. All though the properties like TPI strength CSP are lower than the properties of 50:50/jute:cotton blended yarn but and increasing tendency when the amount of cotton increasing in the blend. The properties like thick thin places, cV%, hairiness, TPI, strength and CSP are very nearer to the properties of 50:50/jute:cotton blended yarn all the properties for blend ratio of 60:40/jute:cotton and 50:50/jute:cotton are nearer to each other and very nearer and comparable to the 80:20/jute:cotton blended yarn. All the properties 10 count blended yarn has decreased a little with the maximum use of jute in the blend.
