Life Table Study of Rice Hispa, Dicladispa Armigera (olivier)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Life tables of rice hispa were constructed in T. Aman 2002 and Boro 2003 to define the mortality of the pest in different life stages. One mating pair of hispa was confined by mylar cage on a rice plant in a large rice field (var. BR3) at mid tillering stage. The female was allowed to lay eggs for 3 nights and then placed on another hill. In this way 3 hills were used for egg deposit by a female. Fifty such females were allowed to deposit eggs on 150 hills to make a cohort of eggs. The eggs were exposed to natural mortality factors till there was possibility of any adult emergence. Larval mortality of rice hispa was the most important limiting factor in hispa population build-up causing 63.5% and 84.5% mortalities in T. Aman 2002 and Boro 2003 season, respectively. In T. Aman 2002 the generation mortality was 94.7% whereas, in Boro 2003 it was 100%. Unfavorable climatic factors were probably the main reason of the mortality.

Achievement/Findings:

On an average 70% leaf damage occurred at both maximum tillering and booting stages. There was no significant difference in numbers of tillers and leaves per hill, and leaf weight per hill. Average straw weight (13.12g/hill) and leaf+straw weight (21.56g/hill) were highest in control plots compared to infested plots at both crop stages. Average grain yield was highest (26.69 g/hill) in control plots followed by the plots infested at maximum tillering (15.78g/hill) and booting stage (18.20g/hill). Results indicate that on an average 41% and 32% yield loss occurred when infestation was done at maximum tillering and booting stages, respectively.
