Documentation and Mapping of Major Cereal Crops in Bangladesh: an Application of GIS Technology

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An application of GIS (Geographic Information System) and Remote Sensing (RS) technology was used to document and mapping of major cereal crops in Bangladesh. The study was conducted during 2001-2002. Data were collected from secondary sources and computer software’s like Excel, SPSS, Are-view and Arc-Info were used for documenting, mapping and analyzing the data. From the figures and maps of different cereal crops, it was found that the area production of rice, wheat and barley occupied the major share of cereal crops in Bangladesh. The growth rate of area and production of maize is found very high compared to other cereal crops. Its area expansion should be intensified in the farmers’ fields for its higher production and area increase.

Objectives:

i. To document and mapping of major cereal crops

ii. To find out the statistical measurement and graph of major cereal crops

iii. To project the production of major cereal crops.

Methodology:

Secondary data from BBS (1998, 2001) and other sources were used in the study. The boundary of the data was taken for last seven years. Computer softwares like Excel, SPSS, Arc-view, Arc-Info and other related measures were used for this purpose. GIS Center of BARI was used for mapping and documentation of data. District boundary map was digitized by using Arc-Info program. The administrative boundaries of 21districts were used for mapping of crops. Data were converted into standard units (ha, tons). Data were classified into some classes on the basis of particular cultivated area of different cereal crops. The area under each class belong to each district was identified by tally marks. The growth rate calculation was done with the help of OLS Semi Log function.

Achievement/Findings:

The average area of wheat in last seven years (1994/95-2000/01) was found 763 thousand ha (7% of the total area), maize 16 thousand ha (0.7%), barley 8 thousand ha (0.3%), rice 10,277 thousand hectares (91%), other crops 68 thousand ha (1%). The average production of wheat was found 1613 thousand m.tons (7% of total production), maize 74 thousand m.tons (0.6%), barley 5thousand m.tons (0.1%), rice 20,046 thousand m.tons (92%), other crops 50 thousand m.tons (0.3%). It was found that the annual rate of change of area (17.30%) and production (29.59%) of maize were very high compared to other cereal crops. The analysis indicated that the prospect of maize cultivation in Bangladesh has very bright future. Also in comparative statement of boro rice wheat and maize, it was seen that area, production and yield of maize were increasing rapidly. The annual rate of change of area and production of maize is found very high compared to other cereal crops. The visualization of maps and graphs for different cereal crops are found very effective for easy understanding of crop situation and helps for future planning of the crops. From the projection analysis, it is found that the requirement of maize has highly upward trend. To meet this requirement the area expansion of maize should be intensified in the farmers’ fields for its higher production and area increase.
