Indigenous Knowledge of Livestock Practised by the Farmers in Mymensingh District of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study investigated the Indigenous Knowledge (IK) on livestock feeding, breeding and health care. The data for this study was collected through interview schedule from a sample of 200 farmers of Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. Twenty two IKs of livestock husbandry practices were identified. Farmers fed green grass, concentrate and molasses with straw for their livestock to increase palatability, feed intake and milk production. Feeding of bamboo leaf to the cow after calving enhance the removal of placenta from the uterus. Feeding pineapple leaf extract, crushed zinger, turmeric and hookka water to cattle or goat prevent from worms. Feeding Jat Bichi Kala with zinger and river ebony to cattle to prevents loose motion. Feeding colostrum to new born score highest (483) and feeding of raw chicken eggs with salt score lowest (16) out of 22I Ks identified. The relative position of each of the IK in terms of their use were calculated and discussed. The IKs identified in this study are useful to livestock development and could be replicated to the farmers of the other locality. Effective on station research is suggested to be undertaken to explore the scientific background of IKs on livestock feeding, breeding and health care.

Objectives:

1. To identify the indigenous knowledge on livestock feeding, breeding and health care with their uses.

2. To assess the extent of use of indigenous knowledge by the farmers in the rural area.

Methodology:

The interview schedule was prepared to collect the required data. The data for this study was collected from 5 thanas namely Valuka, Trishal, Ishwargonj, Muktagacha and Sadar of Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. Five villages were then randomly selected from each thana. Eight farmers who are rearing livestock were purposively selected from each village taking 40 farmers from each thana for a total of 200 farmers. Data were collected during July 1997 to September 1997.

Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and their assessment: Twenty two IKs on livestock husbandry practices were identified. The number of IKs identified were 13,3 and 6 for livestock feeding, breeding and health care respectively. Four points rating scale developed was used to assess IKs of the present investigation. The method of assigning weights to the four alternatives in each statement was frequently, partially, some- times and not at all. A score of 3, 2, 1 and 0 were assigned to frequently, partially, sometimes and not at all responses respectively.

Extent of use of IK for all the 200 respondents were calculated by using the Indigenous Knowledge Use Index (IKUI) which helps to analyse the relative position of each of the IKs in terms of their use. The following formula was used for this purpose: IKUI = n₁ x 3 + n₂ x 2 + n₃ x 1 + n₄ x 0

Where, IKUI = Indigenous Knowledge Use Index.

n₁ X 3 = Number of farmers frequently used the IK.

n₂ x 2 = Number of farmers partially used the IK.

n₃ x 1 = Number of farmers sometimes used the IK.

n₄ x 0 = Number of farmers not at all used the IK.
