Development of Insecticide Application Schedule for the Management of Flower Thrips and Pod Borers in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to develop insecticide (Imidachloprid) application schedule for the effective and economic management of thrips and pod borers attacking mungbean at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during kharif-I, 2012. In single, double and triple spraying of Imidachloprid significantly reduced flower infestation, thrips population and pod borer infestation. The highest yield (1875 kg/ha) was obtained from the plots sprayed twice, one at 35 DAS (100% flowering) and other at 42 DAS (100% podding stage) but the highest benefit comes from spraying once at 42 DAS (100% podding stage). Hence, for managing both flower thrips and pod borers in mungbean economically the most profitable spray schedule should be single spraying at 42 DAS (100% podding stage) and in case of double spraying it should be at 35 DAS (100% flowering) + 42 DAS (100% podding stage).The experimental data were analyzed by MSTAT-C software

Objectives:

To develop insecticide (Imidachloprid) application schedule for the effective and economic management of thrips and pod borers attacking in mungbean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during kharif-I, 2012. There were 7 treatments of Imidachloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) spraying @ 0.5 ml/l at different growth stages of mungbean viz. T₁ = Spray at 35 days after sowing (DAS) (at 100% flowering stage ), T₂ = Spray at 42 days after sowing (DAS) (at 100% podding stage), T₃ = Spray at 49 days after sowing (DAS) (at seed developing stage), T₄ = Spray at (35 + 42) DAS ( at 100% flowering + 100% podding stage), T₅ = Spray at (42 + 49) DAS (at 100% podding + seed developing stage), T₆ = Spray at (35 + 42 + 49) DAS ( at 100% flowering + 100% podding + seed developing stage) and T₇ = Untreated control. The experiments were laid out in RCB design with three replicates.The seeds of BARI Mmung 6 were sown on March 31, 2012 in rows with the spacing of 30 cm. Imidachloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) was sprayed @ 0.5 ml/litre according to the growth stages as described under six treatments. Normal intercultural operations were done.The population data for thrips in flowers were recorded twice, one before every spray and the other after 24 hrs of each spraying. Thrips population was assessed from 20 opened flowers randomly collected from two rows. At maturity, all the pods were collected from 10 randomly selected plants from central four rows of each plot and examined. The infested (bored) and total numbers of pods were counted and the per cent pod infestation was determined.The pods of central four rows of each plot comprising 4.8m2 (1.2m x 4m) area were harvested. The pods were then threshed; grains were cleaned and sun dried. The experimental data were analyzed by MSTAT-C software

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that, for managing both flower thrips and pod borers in mungbean economically insecticide (Imidachloprid) should be sprayed singly at 42 DAS (100% podding stage) and in case of double spraying it should be at 35 DAS (100% flowering) + 42 DAS (100% podding stage).
