Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of farmers alternative (FA) cropping pattern Jute-T.Aman-Boro rice was tested at Manikganj and Jessore in 2011-12 and the objective of the study was to evaluate improved and traditional management practices of farmers with a view to determine the effect of economic performance of management practices. It revealed that in farmer’s practice variety O-9897 of Jute and BRRI dhan 32 variety of T.Aman were used with unbalanced seed rate and fertilizers. In improved pattern, O-72 variety of jute and short duration variety BRRI dhan-33 were planted with recommended doses of seeds & fertilizers and proper cultural practices were followed in crop cultivation. In Manikganj, the improved management FA pattern produced 3295 kg of jute which is 34% higher than farmer’s variety (2170 kg). The yield increased to 13% compared to the yield of T.Aman under farmer’s management (3932 kg). In Jessore, the gross margin (GM) of jute under improved management was estimated to (Tk. 20746) per hectare involving Tk. 68354 as variable cost. The GM was found 48% (Tk. 20746) higher than the GM of farmer’s practice. The gross margin was calculated to Tk. 16717 per hectare, which rose to 23% over gross margin of T.Aman under farmers management..

Fertilizer rate: (Urea-TSP-MP-Gypsum-Zinc Sulphate kg/ha): F pattern: Farmers choice, FI/FA pattern: Jute: 166-51-80-100-0/200-100-40-100-2, T. Aman: 150-90-40-60-10, Boro rice: 210-125-70-70-10.

Pest control: As and when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

The gross margins (GM) of jute and T.Aman under improved management were estimated to Tk. 29889 and Tk. 18774 per hectare involving Tk. 92754 and Tk. 54876 as variable costs. The GM was found 110% and 23.6 % higher than the GM of jute (Tk. -3127) and T.Aman (Tk. 14343) under farmer’s pattern. In improved pattern, O-72 variety of jute and short duration variety BRRI dhan-33 were planted with recommended doses of seeds & fertilizers and proper cultural practices were followed in crop cultivation which resulted 2919 kg/ha of fibre yield and found 19% higher than farmer’s practice (2370 kg/ha). After harvesting of Jute, BRRI dhan 33 variety in T.Aman was planted and grew successfully and yielded 4001 kg per hectare, which was found 16 % higher than the yield of BRRI dhan 32 under farmers management. Under farmers improved management in T.Aman, the total variable cost was accounted to Tk. 44620 per hectare. The overall performance of jute and T.Aman were better than farmer’s managed. The result of third crop of the patterns will be published in the forth coming Annual Report.
