Development of Ipm Practices for the Control of Flower Thrips and Pod Borers in Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effectiveness of IPM approaches using botanicals, synthetic insecticides and white sticky trap were tested against thrips and pod borers of mungbean at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, during kharif-1, 2012. Thrips and pod borers infestation in mungbean reduced significantly by spraying of botanicals and synthetic insecticides. Spraying Thiamethoxam + Chlorantraneliprol (Voliam flexi) @ 0.5 ml/l of water performed best in reducing flower thrips and pod borer infestation followed by Imidachloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) @ 0.5 ml/l.. The highest yield (1933 kg/ha) was obtained from installing white sticky trap + Voliam flexi sprayed plots but the highest benefit (MBCR 3.91) was recorded from sole Imitaf spraying followed by sole Voliam flexi spraying (MBCR 3.47). So considering efficacy, yield and benefit spraying Imidachlorpid (Imitaf 20 SL) @ 0.5 ml/l is the best tool in managing thrips and pod borers of mungbean

Objectives:

To find out the Effectiveness of IPM approaches using botanicals, synthetic insecticides and white sticky trap against thrips and pod borers of mungbean

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during kharif-I, 2012. Use of white sticky trap and application of botanicals and synthetic insecticides considered as treatments of the experiments which were: T₁ = Use of white sticky trap (WST) + Spraying of crushed neem seed extract @ 50 g/l of water, T₂ = Use of white sticky trap (WST) + Spraying of tobacco leaf extract @ 10 g/l of water T₃ = Use of white sticky trap (WST) + Spraying of Imidachloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) @ 0.5 ml/l of water, T₄ = Use of white sticky trap (WST) + Spraying of Thiamethoxam + Chlorantraneliprol (Voliam flexi 300 SC) @ 0.5 ml/l of water, T₅ = Spraying of Imidachloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) @ 0.5 ml/l of water, T₆= Spraying of Thiamethoxam + Chlorantraneliprol (Voliam flexi 300 SC) @ 0.5 ml/l of water, T₇ = White sticky trap (WST) and T₈ = Untreated control.The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Treatment wise botanicals and insecticides were sprayed first at 35 days after sowing (DAS) when plants were in 100% flowering stage and then second spray was done at 42 days after sowing (DAS) when plants were in peak flowering + 100% podding stage. The population data for thrips in flowers were recorded twice, one before every spray and the other after 24 hrs of each spraying. Thrips population was assessed from 20 opened flowers randomly collected. At maturity, all the pods were collected from 10 randomly selected plants from central four rows of each plot and examined. The infested (bored) and total numbers of pods were counted and the per cent pod infestation was determined.The grain obtained from each plot was converted into per hectare yield and data were analysed.

Achievement/Findings:

IPM practices reduced flower infestation by thrips and pod borer infestation in mungbean. Among the practices Voliam flexi performed best considering efficacy followed by Imitaf. The highest yield (1933 kg/ha) was obtained from white sticky trap + Voliam flexi sprayed plots but the highest benefit (MBCR 3.91) come from Imitaf sprays followed by Voliam flexi sprays. Therefore, it might be concluded that spraying with Imidachlorpid (Imitaf 20 SL) @ 0.5 ml/l of water is the best tool in managing thrips and pod borer in mungbean considering efficacy and yield and benefit.
