Performance of Improved Cropping Pattern (fi) Maize-jute-t.aman Through the Replacement of the Variety of Existing Farmers Pattern (f) Maize-jute-t.aman in Medium High Land at Manikganj, Rangpur and Dinajpur.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of cropping pattern Jute- T-Aman-Maize was tested at Nanner & Sreerampur in Dhamrai, Manikganj, Rangpur, Dinajpur and the objective of the study was to evaluate improved and traditional management practices of farmers with a view to determine the effect of economic performance of management practices. In improved pattern, O-72 variety of jute and short duration variety BRRI dhan-33 were planted with recommended doses of seeds & fertilizers and proper cultural practices were followed in crop cultivation. After harvesting of Jute, BRRI dhan 33 variety in T.Aman was planted and grew successfully and yielded 4460 kg per hectare, which was found 15.7% higher than the yield of BRRIdhan 32 under farmers management. The gross margin (GM) of Jute under improved management was estimated to Tk.93550 per hectare involving Tk. 56250 as variable cost in Manikganj. Incase of T.Aman rice, total variable cost was observed 42757 Tk./ha & 64302 Tk./ha at Rangpur and Dinajpur respectively. The gross margin (GM) under FI management increased 51.5% & 58.5% at Rangpur & Dinajpur for jute. Benefit cost Ratio for jute in both sites were 1.65 under FI management which was higher than F management.

Aman: July-August, Maize: December. Fertilizer rate: (Urea-TSP-MP-Gypsum-Zinc Sulphate kg/ha): F pattern: Farmers choice, FI pattern: Jute: 200-50-60-95-11/176-50-40-95-11, T. Aman: 135-90-50-60, Maize: 500-240-180-240-10. Pest control: As and when necessary. Harvest time: F Pattern: Farmers choice, FI pattern: Recommended time.

Jute variety O-9897 and BRRI dhan 32 variety of T.Aman were used with unbalanced seed rate and fertilizers. In improved pattern, O-72 variety of jute and short duration variety BRRI dhan-33 were planted with recommended doses of seeds & fertilizers and proper cultural practices were followed in crop cultivation. In Manikganj, the gross margin (GM) of Jute under improved management was estimated to Tk.93550 per hectare involving Tk. 56250 as variable cost. The GM was found 38% (Tk.67720) higher than the GM of farmer’s practice. Under farmers improved management in T.Aman, the total variable cost was accounted to Tk.61785 per hectare. The gross margin was calculated to Tk. 40157 per hectare, which raised to 96.6% over Gross margin of T.Aman under farmers management in Manikganj. From the farmers pattern jute yield recorded 2143 kg/ha & 2084 kg/ha at Rangpur & Dinajpur respectively, which were much below the improved practices (2672 & 2611 kg/ha). The total variable cost was found Tk. 70797 & 72971 /ha which were less than for jute under FI pattern (Tk. 79349 & 75750 /ha). The Maize crop is now in the field and will be incorporated in next year. The TVC of Jute was Tk. 79349 & 75750 /ha at Rangpur & Dinajpur respectively (Table- 5 b). Incase of T.Aman rice, total variable cost was observed 42757 Tk./ha & 64302 Tk./ha at Rangpur and Dinajpur respectively. The gross margin (GM) under FI management increased 51.5% & 58.5% at Rangpur & Dinajpur for jute. Benefit cost Ratio for jute in both sites were 1.65 under FI management which was higher than F management. Improved management results indicated that recommended management is better and proved to be superior to farmer’s choice of varieties and traditional production technologies.
