BJRI Technology Transfer Through Jute Village & Jute Blocks in Some Selected Areas

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BJRI was established the “ Jute Village” and “Jute Block” demonstrations programme at farm level in 6 locations of different AEZ of Bangladesh during the year 2009. Locations of the Jute village were in Joypura, Nannar and Sreerampur under Dhamrai Upazila and Jute Blocks were in, Kapasia (Gajipur), Islampur & Dewanganj (Jamalpur). The main themes of the programme were to assess and identify the suitability of released jute varieties and constraint to adoption of technologies at farm level. Ways to establish and strengthen farmer’s research-extension linkage. The maximum gross return (178030 Tk/ha) was obtained at kapasia with investing 102830 Tk/ha incase of O-72 variety. In case of O-9897 variety, the maximum gross return (166365 Tk/ha) was found at Kapasia with involving total variable cost 97974 Tk/ha. In case of C.olitorius (O-72 and O-9897), the highest benefit cost ratio was found at Dewanganj Jamalpur (2.07) followed by Islampur Jamalpur (2.16). The maximum gross margin was also found at Islampur (65027 Tk/ha) involving total variable cost 64840 Tk/ha. The benefit cost ratio was 2.00 and 1.61 at Islampur and Kapasia respectively.

Objectives:

i) To assess suitability of released recommended varieties and potential technologies in farmers' environment.

ii) To identify farmers' constraints for adoption of technologies and generate feed back for further development.

Methodology:

Evolved new varieties of jute seeds of BJRI will be distributed among 150 jute growers with a total area of 80 acres of land in the Jute villages of Srirampur, Nannar and Joypura under Dhamrai Upazilla of Dhaka district. MLT sites of different regional/sub-stations of BJRI, 3-5 acres of land will be taken for making Jute block involving 10-15 farmers. The programme will be conducted in collaboration with respective divisions, regional/sub-stations of BJRI and local DAE office. Bench Mark survey will be conducted before implementation for the new technology transfer at farm level.

Information on yield and agro economic performance of improved jute varieties were found the highest yield of O-72 (3165 kg/ha) among the C.olitorius varieties at Kapasia, second highest yield was O-72 (2757 kg /ha) at Dewanganj respectively and the lowest yield (1632 kg/ha) was of obtained at Joypura, Dhamri. In case of O - 9897 variety maximum yield was found at kapasia (2.95 t/ha) followed by Islampur (2.81 t/ha). The maximum gross return (178030 Tk/ha) was obtained at kapasia with investing 102830 Tk/ha incase of O-72 variety. In case of O-9897 variety, the maximum gross return (166365 Tk/ha) was found at Kapasia with involving total variable cost 97974 Tk/ha. In case of C.olitorius (O-72 and O-9897), the highest benefit cost ratio was found at Dewanganj Jamalpur (2.07) followed by Islampur Jamalpur (2.16). Incase of yield of C.capsularis variety CVL-1 the maximum yield (3.11 T/ha), gross return was 129867 t/ha with total variable cost of Tk. 64840 per hectare at Islampur, Jamalpur. The maximum gross margin was also found at Islampur (65027 Tk/ha) involving total variable cost 64840 Tk/ha. The benefit cost ratio was 2.00 and 1.61 at Islampur and Kapasia respectively.
