Up Date Study on Cost and Return of Jute and Allied Fibre Crops Production at Farm Level in Different Areas of Bangladesh During the Year 2009

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted on cost and return of jute and allied fibre crops production at farm level to estimate the cost and return to identify the socio-economic constraints for jute and allied fibre crops production during the year 2009. The total cost per hectare was found highest in Jamalpur (Tk. 72858) compared to other three locations. It appears that per hectare average yield of fibre was 2717 kg/ha was the highest in Kustia and lowest in Natore (1976 kg/ha). The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was highest in Natore 1.69 on the basis of full cost and 1.86 on the basis of cash cost in olitorious jute. In capsularis, the average gross margin was recorded Tk 19098/ha and Tk. 14526/ha on the basis of cash cost and full cost. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was highest in Natore 1.50 on the basis of full cost and 1.63 on the basis of cash cost.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Survey method was used to collect data for the study by using structured questionnaire conducted during 2009. The survey was conducted at 4 locations viz. Manikganj, Natore, Jamalpur, and Kushtia where jute was grown intensively. A total sample of 200 farmers (50 farmers from each location) were selected randomly. Tabular method was used for analyzing the data. Co-ordination from the respective scientists at research stations of BJRI, concerned personnel from DAE and Jute Directorate were taken in need for data collection during the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the survey results, it was found that the average total cost (TC) of all the location was amounted to Tk. 61115 per hectare and labour was 169 man days per hectare. The average cash cost per hectare was, about 88% of total cost, amounting to Tk. 53917 incase of Olitorius jute production at farm level. The total cost per hectare was found highest in Jamalpur (Tk. 72858) compared to other locations. It appears that both average gross return and gross margin per hectare were Tk.81336/ha and Tk. 24939/ha on the basis of full cost & cash cost over the locations. The highest gross return was observed in Kustia (91019 Tk/ha) but the highest gross margin was recorded Tk 31419/ha in Natore on the basis of full cost and Tk 37102/ha in Kustia on the basis of cash cost, respectively, for Olitorious jute. In Capsularis jute, the average cash cost per hectare was, about 92% of total cost, amounting to Tk. 52691/ha. The total cost per hectare was found highest in Jamalpur (Tk. 69281/ha) compared to other locations. The average gross margin was recorded Tk 19098/ha and Tk. 14526/ha on the basis of cash cost and full cost. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was highest in Natore 1.50 on the basis of full cost and 1.63 on the basis of cash cost.
