Up Date Study on Cost and Return of Jute and Allied Fibre Crops Production at Farm Level in Different Areas of Bangladesh During the Year 2008-09

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The survey study was conducted to understand and estimate the cost and return of jute and allied fibre cultivation at Rangpur, Faridpur, Kishoreganj, Manikganj and Jessore districts where jute and allied fibres are grown intensively. On both full and cash cost basis, highest gross margin per hectare for Olitorius cultivation was observed at Jessore with higher BCR (1.15 and 2.50 respectively) in comparison to other locations. In case of Capsularis cultivation highest gross margin in both full and cash cost basis was observed at Kishoreganj with higher BCR (1.73 and 3.70 respectively). The highest gross margin was also found at Kishoreganj for Kenaf cultivation with higher BCR (2.34 and 4.22 respectively) in comparison to other locations.

Objectives:

i) To know the socio-economic characteristics of jute and allied fibre growers,

ii) To estimate the cost and return of jute and allied fibre and

iv) To identify the socio-economic constraints for jute and allied fibre production.

Methodology:

Structured questionnaire survey was conducted during 2008 jute growing season for collecting the associated data on production activity. The survey was conducted at Rangpur, Faridpur, Kishoreganj, Manikganj and Jessore where jute is grown intensively. A total sample of 200 farmers (40 farmers from each location) will be selected randomly. Tabular method was used for analyzing the data. Co-ordination from the respective scientists at research stations of BJRI, concerned personnel from DAE and Jute Directorate were taken in need for data collection during the study.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that the average total cost (TC) of all the location was amounted to Tk. 55470 per hectare. The average cash cost per hectare was, about 68% of total cost, amounting to Tk. 37743 at farm level. On both full and cash cost basis, highest gross margin per hectare for Olitorius cultivation was observed at Jessore with higher BCR (1.15 and 2.50 respectively) in comparison to other locations. In case of Capsularis, it was found that the average total cost (TC) was amounted to Tk. 44497 per hectare and the average cash cost per hectare was, about 56% of total cost amounting to Tk. 24739 at farm level. The highest gross margin in both full and cash cost basis was observed at Kishoreganj with higher BCR (1.73 and 3.70 respectively). The highest gross margin was also found at Kishoreganj for Kenaf cultivation with higher BCR (2.34 and 4.22 respectively) in comparison to other locations.
