Up Date Study on Cost and Return of Olitorius Jute Cultivation at Farm Level in Different Areas of Bangladesh During the Year 2007-08

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The survey study was conducted to understand and estimate the cost and return as well as to identify the socio-economic constraints of Olitorius jute cultivation through structured questionnaire to the farmers of Rangpur, Faridpur, Kishoreganj and Jessore districts. It revealed from the study that the average gross return per hectare was observed Tk. 61959.83 and found the highest in Faridpur (Tk. 80384.97) among the locations under study. The average gross margin per hectare was estimated Tk. 42377.80 and Tk. 21308.73 on the basis of total cash cost and total variable cost (full cost) basis, gross margin per hectare was observed higher in Faridpur (Tk. 27201.20 and Tk. 50522.98 per hectare) compared to other locations. Among the reported constraints, increasing rate of human labor wages reported by the higher percentage (77.75%) of sampled farmers followed by cultivation hampered by devastating flood (65.50%), low price of fibre (56.75%), unstable price of fibre (45.75%) and non-availability of HYV seed (33.25%).

Objectives:

i) To estimate the cost and return of jute and

ii) To identify the socio-economic constraints for jute production.

Methodology:

Structured questionnaire survey was conducted during 2007 jute growing season for collecting the associated data on production activity. The survey was conducted at four locations where jute is grown intensively. A total sample of 80 farmers (20 farmers from each location) were selected randomly. Tabular method was used for analyzing the data. Co-ordination from the respective scientists at research stations of BJRI, concerned personnel from DAE and Jute Directorate were taken in need for data collection during the study.

Achievement/Findings:

The result demonstrates that the human labour cost incurred higher percentage of total variable cost (53.68%). In case of cash cost, hired human labour incurred the highest percentage (69.42%) of total cash cost per hectare. The average gross return per hectare was observed Tk. 61959.83 and found the highest in Faridpur (Tk. 80384.97) among the locations under study.
