Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was conducted at Jute Waste Processing Division of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute during the year of 2005 to 2007. The various existing pulping process were studied and a low cost environment friendly process was primarily selected for producing high grade pulps from jute waste. After some trial productions satisfactory pulps were obtained. To optimize the pulping process the possible key parameters of the pulping process were identified and the individual effect of the key variables are being accessed. Among the five possible key variables (T,P,WLR,T,Hydrogen per oxide, conc.) the effect of the reaction time (t) has been examined.The resulting pulps possessed good qualities in appearance, whiteness, texture and the holocellulose content of the pulps also confirm their good quality.

Objectives:

To produce of high quality pulp from low quality jute and jute waste.

Methodology:

Jute waste was collected from the spinning mill and then chemically treated in the Chemical Processing laboratory of Pilot Plant and Processing Division of BJRI. The pulping process consist of three stages, First stage: Raw material preparation: the jute waste were cut into chips of 2 mm-3 mm in length for better absorption of the chemicals and homogenous reaction. Second stage: Lsothermal cooking formic acid: The jute waste then cooked in formic acid at a constant temperature of 70 degree Centigrade mainted by a water bath. The cooking process was performed at atmospheric pressure with 80% Formic acid (HCOOH) liquor. The following parameters were varied to identify the optimum conditions, Wood liquor ration, WLR = gm fibre/100 gm liquor = 8-16. Reaction time, t = 60 min-90 min Third stage: Reaction medium was made with formic acid and hydrogen peroxide: The stock from the second stage was treated with a liquor of formic acid and hydrogen peroxide at normal boiling temperature (=100C) and ambient. The following parameters were optimized. Wood liquor ratio, WLR= gm fibre/100 gm liquor = 8-16. Hydrogen peroxide concentration = gm Hydrogen per oxide/gm fibre. = 5-6 Reaction time, t= 120 min-180 min. The resulting pulp was then washed to a natural pH and then air-dried The holocellulose content of the pulp was determined.

Achievement/Findings:

For the production of good quality paper high holocellulose content pulp is desired. It is seen that pulp of 99% holocellulose content was achieved through this process has the extra benefits of being environment friendly and also dosen't required expensive controlled environment. The pulping process has three key variable parameters, reaction time (t), wood liquor ratio (WLR) and the hydrogen per oxide content. The aim of the experiment was to assess the individual effect of the variables on the resultant pulp thus identify the optimum condition for producing high quality pulp. Among the three variables (t, WLR, Hydrogen per oxide conc.) the effect of reaction time has been studied and the other parameters are being evaluated. The resulting pulps possessed good qualities in appearance, whiteness, texture and the holocellulose content of the pulps also confirm their good quality.
