Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This project was mainly trying to measure different physic o-mechanical properties of union and blended fabrics. The tensile strength, abrasion resistance, drape co-efficient, stiffness and thermal conductivity, wettability and static charge were measured. Finally blended fabric is suitable for using.

Objectives:

To select proper fabric for specific uses and the optimization of the performance characteristics of jute.

Methodology:

Different types of jute and jute-blended fabrics were collected from Pilot Plant Division of BJRI.Tensile strength is defined as the maximum load that a material can support without fracture when being stretched, divided by the original cross sectional area of the material.The drape co-efficient has been defined as the percentage W2/W1 of the draped specimen. Drape co-efficient = (W2/W1 )? 100. Where, W2 = Weight of remaining inner part of papering of the draped specimen. W1 = Weight of original paper ring. Abrasion is just one aspect of wear and is the rubbing away of the component fibers and yarns of the fabrics. The WIRA abrasion tester is used for measurement of abrasion resistance. Absorption was measured by placing the sample fabric on a horizontal embroidery frame and dropping one drop of distilled water from a burette of height of 0.95 cm on to the cloth and measuring the time for disappearance of a secular reflection from the water drop with the help of digital stop watch. Two specimen warp way and two weft way are usually tested. To carry out a test the specimen is cut to size with the aid of the template and than both template specimen are transferred to the platform with the fabric underneath. Both are slowly post forward and the fabric is continued until the tip of the specimen viewed in the mirror cuts both index lines. The bending length can immediately be read out from the scale mark opposite a zero line in graved is the scale of the plat form. The thermal conductivity of textile material is determined by the apparatus, which consists of a step down transformer, an ammeter, a voltmeter, three copper discs, an electric heater and three thermometers.

Achievement/Findings:

One union fabric of three different stages (gray, bleached, printed) and one blended fabric were tested using different properties. From result it was observed that the tensile strength of the four samples were 79.2~209.5 lb/inch in the warp way and 279.8~32 lb/inch in the weft way. In the weft tensile strength was higher than warp for union fabric but for blended fabric it shown opposite character. Blended fabric had more abrasion resistance than others. Fabric’s drape was find out that gray was harder than bleached and printed samples and 62.79% for blended fabrics. Blended and printed fabrics were softer because their drape co-efficient was lower than 65%. From data it was shown that the time of absorbency was very low of bleached union and blended (bleached) fabrics that means both were more wettable than gray and printed samples. Bending Modulus compared the thickness of material in fabrics of different thickness and the flexural rigidity shows a close relationship between the values and the personal judgment of stiffness. Using data bending length, flexural rigidity and bending modulus were carried out. Result indicated that the thermal conductivity was higher in printed fabric and lower for gray fabrics. Thermal conductivity was very low for blended fabrics. Thermal resistance was nearly similar for all samples. It is observed that the static charge for all samples is very low. So it can be resulted that static charge is effect less on the observing samples.
