Development of Culture Techniques for Increasing Shrimp (penaeus Monodon) Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The trial was designed with three stocking densities of 5, 7 and 9 PLs/m². After 90 days of rearing, the shrimps attained an average growth of 24.65g, 23.50g and 22.5g in ponds with the above three densities, respectively. At this stage white spot disease out broke in shrimps of all the ponds. Immediately, the experiment was terminated and the shrimps were harvested from all the ponds. After 90 days of rearing, the production of bagda was highest (526.75 kg/ha) in the pond with 5.0/m² density followed by 9.0/m2 (455.00 kg/ha) and 7.0m² (407.75 kg/ha) indicating higher production in lower stocking densities. Survival rate was also higher and FCR value was lower in low stocking densities (5.0/m²). Water temperature was found higher (39.600C) during prolonged draught in June. At the time, dissolved oxygen also flop in all the treatments. Besides, other water quality parameters were found congenial for shrimp culture and the differences of water quality parameters among different treatments were insignificant.

Objectives:

To Increase production of shrimp through manipulating of stocking, feeding, water quality management and harvesting.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with 3 treatments and 2 replications each, stocking density were maintained at 5, 7 & 9 PLs/m². Feeding was done by commercial shrimp nursery feed at a rate of 200%, 150%, 100% and 50% for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th week of nursery. Then commercial shrimp feed starter and grower and farm made feed was supplied at a rate of 1-3% of the body wt. twice a day at dawn and dusk. About 25-30% of the water was exchanged in weekly interval. Aeration was done by paddle wheel aerator or by air jet 4-6 aerators per ha and 6-8 hour per day after 1 month of stocking. Whenever the shrimp were attained an average body weight of 25-30 g harvesting was done by cast netting, fish trap or by de-watering the ponds.

Achievement/Findings:

Successful implementation of the proposed project will generate a sustainable, eco-friendly culture technique of shrimp, which will provide the production level of shrimp 4-5 fold than the existing level of production. The findings of the project will help the marginal farmers for the better management of the ghers.
