Crop Diversification: Production Potential and Environmental Impact of Introducing Gift in Shrimp Farms.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Shrimp attained an average weight of 23.77g in culture pattern-1, where shrimps were stocked with silver barb. This growth of shrimp was almost same with the growth of shrimp pattern-3 (23.70g), where only shrimp was stocked but lower than that of pattern-2 (24.93g) where shrimp was stocked with GIFT. The specific growth rate (SGR) of shrimp was 6.9%, 6.94% and 6.9% in culture patterns 1, 2 and 3, respectively. However, the SGR for the silver barb and GIFT was 2.56% and 4.26%, respectively. The final weight of silver barb was 69.75g and that of GIFT was 161.83g. Survival of shrimp was higher of 65.50% in pattern-2, followed by 59.97% in pattern-3 and 57.03% in pattern-1. The survival of silver barb was 58.10%, which is lower than that of 78.43% of GIFT. Production of shrimp was higher of 284.05 kg/ha in monoculture, followed 162.47 kg/ha in concurrent culture with silver barb and 136.77 kg/ha in concurrent culture with GIFT. In spite of similar stocking density and ratio of silver barb:shrimp and GIFT:shrimp, production of GIFT (1272.95kg/ha) was higher than that of silver barb (402.72kg/ha).

Objectives:

Optimization of the stocking density and comparative growth performances of Bagda and GIFT in shrimp farms.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted to assess the impact of rearing silver barb (B. gonionotus) and GIFT with bagda shrimp (P. monodon) in three culture patterns each with a replication. A nursery enclosure of 40m2 with fine meshed nylon-net was set up in each pond for nursing shrimp PL. The ponds were prepared by sun drying followed by liming with CaO @ 250 kg/ha, and fertilization with mustard oil cake (MOC), DAP, and urea @ 50, 20, and 10 kg/ha, respectively. After 7 days, the ponds were filled up to a depth of 80cm with tidal water after partial sedimentation through a feeder canal and fertilized using the above mentioned dose of inorganic fertilizers. Hatchery produced post larvae of P. monodon of an average weight of 0.006g were stocked and reared in the nursery enclosures. Silver barb (B. gonionotus) fingerling of an average weight of 3.24g and GIFT fry of an average weight of 0.98g were directly stocked to the ponds in March. At the 14th day, the juvenile P. monodon were allowed to spread over the entire pond by up-folding the nylon net of nursery enclosure. Shrimp and fish were fed with a common prepared feed (approx. protein content, 30%) consisting of a mixture of fish meal (29%), MOC (15%), rice bran (30%), soybean meal (16%), wheat flour (9%) and vitamin premix (0.1%). Feed was supplied twice (dawn and dusk) daily @ 5~3% of the total shrimp and fish standing biomass.

Achievement/Findings:

No adverse effect of this eco-friendly crop rotation farming on the aquatic environment. Moreover, it is expected that economic evaluation of successive mono-culture of shrimp and crop-rotation of shrimp with GIFT could be one of the excellent way to reduce the risk of natural disaster; and it could generate extra income for shrimp farmers and national fish and shrimp production as a whole will be increased from the same resources.
