In this study one sample of Novotex furnishing fabric and two samples of conventional furnishing ones have been investigated. Compared to conventional fabrics Novotex furnishing fabric was found heavier. But weft-way strength and bursting strength of Novotex fabric were greater than that of conventional ones. Warp-way bending length of Novotex fabric was lower compared to conventional ones, but weft-way bending length was comparatively very high. This means that warp-way draping was better for Novotex fabric but weft-way draping is not satisfactory.

To measure the physical characteristics of jute fabrics having different warp and weft construction and relate them to characteristics of the yarns used

Home Furnishing fabrics are generally manufactured from cotton, wool and man- made fibres. But BJRI (Tech) has been using jute in combination with cotton/ m-m fibres for producing home Furnishing Fabrics. And so far some products called Novotex fabrics have been developed to be used as Home Furnishing ones viz. curtains, draperies. In this study the performance characteristics of Novotex Home Furnishing Fabrics, made of jute as filling and cotton as ends, have been investigated along with some conventional Home Furnishing Fabrics used in this study were manufactured at BJRI (Tech), but conventional Home Furnishing Fabrics were purchased from local market. During the purchase top quality Home Furnishing Fabrics were avoided. The constructional parameters of the fabrics are given below

The weight of Novotex plain weave fabric was 187.5 gm/m2 and that of conventional plain fabric was 146.8 gm/m2.The weight of strip cotton cloth was 148.43 gm/m2 which is heavier than that of conventional plain fabric. Again Novotex plain weave fabric is heavier than the conventional plain fabric. Breaking strength of Novotex plain weave fabric in the warp way was 43.2 kgf whereas that of conventional plain fabric was 54.8 kgf and in case of stripe conventional fabric strength was 44.3 kgf. For both the cases breaking strength of the conventional plain fabric were found better than that of Novotex plain weave fabric in respect of warp-way strength. But in case of weft-way strength it was found that the breaking strength of conventional plain fabric and stripe fabric were 11.4 kgf and 13.4 kgf respectively which means that Novotex plain fabric, weft-way is stronger than conventional ones. Bursting strength of Novotex plain weave fabric was122.0 lbs/in2, but in case of conventional plain weave fabric and stripe fabric's strengths were 87.8 lbs/in2 and 81.80 lbs/in2 respectively. It indicates that Novotex plain fabric is better than conventional ones in respect of bursting strength. From the study of cover factor it was found that conventional fabric is better than Novotex furnishing fabric. In case of bending length it was observed both the fabric have got the similar results in warp-way. But in weft-way, Novotex fabric is stiffer than conventional fabric.
